Amitryptaline side effects

Hi can anyone tell me what side effects they had from amitryptaline. I was on 25mg and was ok apart from a little groggy and dry mouth. GP has upped the dose to 50mg because I wasn’t sleeping with pain in my neck and head. I feel dreadful. Very zombie like and can’t concentrate. I did however sleep last night.

I couldn't tolerate a higher dose either, same side effects as you and going back to the lower dose which I was taking like you didn't help either. My rheumatologist suggested nortriptyline which I did find helpful short term.

did he suggest to take it earlier in the evening? some people find that beneficial

The gp asked what side effects I got on 25mg and I said dry mouth and hangover feeling. She said just give 50mg a try. I will try taking it earlier tonight and see how I go.

normal advice is take it before bed and when people get side effects and in particular th egroggines then taking it earlier can help. Taking it 2 hours earlier perhaps and see how you go. Adjust until you feel it better for you.

Hi Patdoyle, if you’ve been made to feeling like a zombie, dry mouthed etc with 25g you’ll really struggle with 50g I’m afraid. I’ve been on it for years as well as many other medications which don’t help now but when I first started out I was only on the Amitryptaline and Tramadol. If you can you need to pace yourself throughout the day. How many pillows are you using and what type of pillows? Sending hugs 🤗

I use 2 pillows but they are not big ones. I’ve tried sleeping with one pillow but I also have menieres so I need to be elevated. It’s hard to find a good neck pillow

Have you tried one memory style pillows?

I'm on 90mg I take it at 8.30pm so that I won't be too drowsy to deal with kids in the morning. I would personally not give up on any drug until I'd been on it for 6 weeks bc many people only have side effects for that long.

Yes I came off amatrypaline as I also had bad side effects now on duloxetine which is much better

It takes 2 weeks for your body to adjust to any new dose I take 40mg early evening it helps with my nerve pain. Perhaps that was too big a jump from 25mg to 50mg. I reiterated my dose up gradually just like when you come off meds you do it gradually. Good luck x

I was on 75mg but it was affecting my water works so doc took me off it and started me on pregabalin which so far is better for me.

I took 50mg and I was terrible on it, I felt exhausted all the time, confused, couldn’t remember anything, couldn’t concentrate so I couldn’t drive, I began seeing things and kept falling over, my husband took me to a&e, was in hospital for 3 weeks, even they didn’t catch on that it was amitryptaline that was causing it, when I was discharged I still was no better my son said to me try not taking the amitryptaline, I didn’t take one night and the next I was about 90% better. Now I’m on nortrypaline so so much better.

Sturdy.

10mg was a bad start, splitting eye-headache, down to 1x2mg drops, increasing was much better. Played around with the dosage a month, then was put on 10mg for 2 weeks, then 25mg. It helped get a druggier sleep. Gave up after 4 months:It had 8 side effects: drowsy, tired at daytime (despite taking it at 6pm), very dry mouth and then cough, weight +6kg, taking months to get down again, fuzzy eyes, higher pulse, and what then made me stop is then that my focal seizures increased more and more. In the meantime I'd found out my 30 "wakers" and their "stoppers" (see that long post) and now TCM/acupressure as improved sleep a bit more too, plus of all things 1min. cold showering at night against bodily &/or mental unrest.

They helped me in the beginning. I was only on 10mg but could take two at night if need be. They did help my fibro pains at the time and , now on tramadol. I had no side effects in the beginning but I was 10 years younger then. Got started again on them but they kept me awake all night and constantly running to the loo and was ending up lying on the couch like a zombie all day unable to do anything. I would eventually conk out after about 3 days/nights with no sleep so stopped them. Weird how all those years ago they helped me but Pain Clinic Dr said I was right to stop them. Not everyone will have side effects but I was so zombie like also. You should wean down if you are coming off them. I didn't do that and was fine .but was quite ill as didn't realise you had to do this with pregabalin which I stopped also a couple of years ago due to side effects. Good luck

I take 100mgs and it makes the day semi bearable but be very careful. I nearly overdosed the other night by taking them twice. Fibro fog has a lot to answer for!

Hey there

I was out on that drug to stop nerve pains in my body. I started taking it and went on holiday to Wales. While I was there I noticed that I started to feel dead flesh numb on my stomach. By the end of the week I was dead flesh numb from the neck down over all of my body. I reported this to the doctor and got a bit of a telling off for not stopping the drug earlier. It did stop the nerve pain but came at a cost too high to pay

Hi Patdoyle. I had extra side effects when my Dr doubled my amitriptyline dose (10mg to 20). As well as grogginess and dry mouth I felt anxious, a bit shaky and brain fog. I know many fibromites get brain fog, but I didn't usually, only if I'd had a seriously painful flare up. Frankly I think it would've been better to increase the dose in stages with the benefit of hindsight but I obeyed my Dr. Anyway I'm pleased to say that those side effects settled after about a week. I have now had to go up from 20mg to 25 and am coping fine. If it doesn't settle after giving it a try I'd discuss with GP. They do them in 10mg tablets (blue) as well as 25mg (mine are yellow).

I found the shakiness and brain fog really frightening. Glad you replied saying you were the same. I’ve gone back to 25mg which I can cope with. My reason for increasing the dose was my sister died of Covid and I am struggling to deal with how quick she went. It’s been very hard. The fibro kicked off and I found dealing with death and me feeling dreadful was not good.

Hi Patdoyle. I was on 25mg and went up to 50mg. The grogginess / hangover feeling came back with a vengeance but only for about 3 months then it all calmed down. If you feel you can stick with it, do give it a try.
