I havebeen taking amtriptyline for Fibromyalgia for over a year now but I have some terrible side effects. I find it causes moodiness, weight gain, dry mouth and complete lack of libido. The good effects are that it helps with my pain and also helps with my sleep. Does anyone have any suggestions for an alternative treatment So I can discuss with my doctor. Thanks

Amtriptyline side effects for fibromyalgia sufferer
I tried amytriptyline, just could not use it, too many side effects as you say. I am on tramadol been so for about 10 years and it has been great for me, You have to juggle it about can’t take it too late at night or don’t get a good sleep.Take care and hope you find what is right for you
I was taking amitriptyline for 2 years, but always suffered with the tiredness it gives you, pain clinic changed it to nortriptyline and I'm finding it much better
Before I even read your post, in my mind I said ‘moody/agro/snappiness - it’s great for knocking oneself out when it happens but I’ve noticed with my partner when he’s had 1 occasionally for pain and over exhaustion/to knock him out to sleep, a few hours later the following day he has displayed quite an explosive emotion and I’ve also felt the rage rise (but then as a female, we have experienced it with our monthly hormonal differences so we can manage it slightly better!) I’ve often felt too groggy and not completely mentally functional with work etc x
I generally stick to Zapain as I know where I am with them and can function in a normal setting plus either half or a full 5ml diazepam. I still have constant daily pain and aches but maybe I don’t know what is bad anymore and function in the best way that I know or I’m used to? 🤷🏻♀️
Awful medication 😡 I had night terrors, and a total lack of energy! I was a complete zombie during the day, and decided that I didn't want to live like this!! I've been thrown prescription drugs by the bucket load and told to "basically" get on with it! Take control my friend, research any medication, but look into natural remedies, self help, yoga and meditation! 🙏🏾🧘🏼♀️
Wow, yoga, meditation, tai chi and best if all for me us aquatherapy, along with 400 mg. Gabapentin 3 times daily is what it takes for me to get through a typical day. I went to Pain Management Program at the Shirley Ryan Ability Lab in downtown Chicago, top Fibromyalgia specialists in the country, and that was their recommended plan of action. I have check ups every three months. I tried Lyrica but couldn't put up with weight gain, swelling and cramping in legs and high co-pay so I had to switch to something else.
Amitriptyline in higher doses was terrible for me, so I have settled with having one tablet a week - so at least I get a reasonable nights sleep once a week without feeling like hell the next day.
Nortritylline worked well for me, without too many ill effects. I refused Amytriptylline for all the reasons you state, but Nortriptylline seems to help me sleep without the nasty side effects. Tastes disgusting though.
Cheers, Midori
Hi Daone, I have been on Amitriptyline for 17 years for neck and shoulder pain plus it helps me sleep. I can only tolerate 10mg so maybe you are taking too much and need to reduce the dose? I have tried Nortriptyline but it doesn't help with sleep so I swapped back. Jo xx
