Hi i am 62 years old and for the last year have been experiencing aches and pains in my body, especially my back, hips and legs. Have been on various meds but doctor not diagnosed fibromalgia. Last weekend things were really severe, i had excruciating headaches and nausea and was admitted to hospital overnight but discharged eventually after mri as nothing found. All my symptoms seem to point to fibromalgia, the pain, headaches, hearing disturbance and absolute fatigue, no energy at all. I am so exhausted but as soon as i go to bed my whole body is restless and aching with cramp like pain. How were you able to get your doctor to diagnose your problem as fibromalgia and what did he prescribe.
There is an 18 point trigger test that can be done to help diagnose fibromyalgia, but other than that your doctor has to rule out all other possibilities, so expect to go for a few tests. The first thing my doctor did was prescribe amitriptyline to help with sleep. With fibro, we don’t get into stage four sleep so our body doesn’t recover each night as it should. Amitriptyline helps our brain get into this stage of sleep. The doctor should also be able to prescribe some painkillers but be careful, they all come with side effects so it will be a lot of trial and error. I also have a magnesium spray for under my tongue which stops the feeling of cramps and restless legs at night. Just google restless leg spray and you should find something.
For me, someone had said in passing that what I had sounded like fibromyalgia and I had never heard of it before. I researched it and saw that I had just about every symptom so I went to the doctor with this information. He agreed but I had to go through the other tests to rule out other problems. Doctors just don’t have the time to know everything about everything and if you take your research to the doctor it may help x
It is still used in NZ as a guide, and can help focus research on what is going on. I had it done again six months ago. I’m not saying it is the ultimate test but I think it still has some value.
Doctors need to rule out Rheumatoid arthritis, polymyalgia etc if all these prove negative then usually put down to FMS. Theres not much confirmed info on why get it or proven therapies but basically we get fed constant pain signals even when no injury present and at night we rarely reach the stages of sleep where body repairs itself so bit of viscous cycle.
thankyou everyone for your replies and info. I have an appointment for blood tests on thursday morning and a prescription for amitriptyline to help with my restless legs at night and maybe help me get some sleep. I will keep you updated and carry on reading everyones stories as it helps.
