Pain management

I’ve just received a man appointment to see some dr for pain management. Any thoughts on this?

I am sorry not sure what you mean by a man appointment? Did your GP not tell you they were going to refer you for pain management?

From what I’ve read on here, pain management clinics vary hugely. I initially saw a physio, long appointment of almost an hour. This was all note taking, no examination. I was offered a 4 week Tai Chi course which I enjoyed, and a series of lectures which were pretty abysmal and nothing I couldn’t have read about online. I was put on a waiting list for hydrotherapy but that was probably about a year’s wait.

Some are more dynamic with individual appointments, go with an open mind, there might be things that will help you.

A very difficult question to answer. My pain management programme in Leicester was excellent. From the initial assessment, to the 8 week 1 day a week programme to the follow up 12 weeks later. We all found aspects of it helpful. I have talked to people in other areas who's experience on their programme was less than my own experience. If you were going to Leicester I would highly recommend commend it.

It seems to depend on where you live, some good some like mine Sunderland for instance, poor or bad, for me a total waste of time.

Before attending, I completed the questionnaire fully, arrived to the appointment for the said questionnaire to be put on the desk face down, dismissed without being looked at.

The attendees being myself , a psychologist and physiotherapist, the latter not speaking through out. The psychologist mainly concentrated on two areas of what I Could do. There was no examination, nor mention of. After some time I felt there was little more to be gained, so I left. A follow up letter never arrived but did get copy from my gp, saying, They had discharged me back to his care as I could fully manage and cope with my condition.

I can only draw the conclusion that you must demonstrate a desperate need or show visibly the amount of pain you are in. As I have been in "Pain" or 45+ years and have gone to great lengths so as no one sees how bad I am, this does not work in my favour, and secondly, if you live in or around Sunderland Nhs area, expect second class service and don't be too disappointed at receiving third class or no service at all.

I can only hope your area is better served.
