So pains got so bad over weekend. I looked up for advice on 111 NHS and was told to phone 999 for an ambulance. Long story short I was given a late appointment last night to see a doctor at my local walk in centre. The doctor said that I need to have more MRI scans etc cause she says something else is not right and it needs checking. She is contacting my doctor in the hope that advice coming from a fellow gp will force them to do something and not fob me off. She couldn't give me any other medication but did suggest I try Piriton 4mg to help with sleep and it makes you drowsy. I only worry that yes it will make me drowsy but will it be enough to send me to sleep? I have had sleeping pills in the past but they've never out weighed the pain. So has anyone else taken these or anything similar and can give me some advice please?
Gentle hugs to all xxx

I would be very dubious about taking a medication to make you sleep, which is not actually a sleeping tablet. Piriton is an antihistamine, and should not be taken just to aid sleep.
My GP sometimes prescribes it to me for a skin condition I have which flares up from time to time, and is very itchy and Piriton helps with the itch, but it doesn't make me sleep.
You could ask your pharmacist if there is anything you could take? They will know what medication your on (if any) and what would be suitable for you to take.
I am sorry but if GP offered piriton I would have been very angry. It is for allergies but does have a very mild sedative effect. Basically it would do nothing for pain nor sleep. Personally if your GP as run out of ideas to help with pain then ask to see a specialist pain consultant.
Thanks for all your replies. Very helpful. I havent taken any of the Piriton and wont be after reading these comments.
I did however go to a health shop today as I remember reading here the other day about magnesium salts/spray. I got myself lavender and chamomile pillow sleep spray, magnesium sleep mineral lotion and magnesium oil spray which helps repair and relax muscles. So I will be giving them a start tonight and see how they work.
I use the lavender spray I wouldn't go to bed without spraying it around the room and on my pillow ,I sprayed it on my sons computer chair on his pillow and in the air while he was out his room my son is usually up half the night on the computer I expected him to ask what the smell was but no after about half an hour he was in bed sleeping like a baby he didn't even know so it must work !!he's 30 .I still wake up 2 or 3 times a ñight to go to the loo but have no problem getting straight back so sleep hope it works for you I'm going to try the magnesium spray now youv mentioned it good luck x
I love the smell of lavender anyway. I have to say,,,,,with a smile on my face,,,I used the magnesium sleep lotion last night. When I got into bed I was absolutely shattered and must have fallen asleep within 20 mins and slept for a good 3 hours pain free!!!!!!! About 6 this morning legs started going but I didn't mind as I got a bit of sleep. Will defo continue using the lotion and spray for the time being xxxx
My GP prescribes me nortriptyline, it is an old style anti depressant, but in lower doses it helps sleep & reduces nerve pain & I find it very helpful.
Afternoon, sorry to read of your pain , I hope your gp contacts you very soon for this to be followed up quickly . Yes differently agree speak to your surgery or pharmacist, sending gentle hugs back xx
I don’t take Piriton. But I take another brand of Antihistamine which has Cetirizine Hydrochloride in with the dose of 10mg only taken at night for my allergies because it can usually help me to get to sleep.
I didn’t really want to be taking it permanently but knowing it can help me get to sleep, made it easier to accept it.
My friend was prescribed piriton to help her sleep after a sudden bereavement. I was surprised because I only knew it as an antihistamine, but apparently it is used for that purpose. It did help to tide her over by inducing a drowsy relaxed effect. This was very much about emotional distress though, and if full-on sleeping tablets didn’t help you sleep through the pain, I doubt piriton would
I think your health shop buys sound good - I personally find transdermal magnesium helps me feel sleepy. Again though, it doesn’t overcome pain, but it does help me relax through it.
Good luck with the doctor and the MRIs -really hope you get some pain relief and sleep one way or another x
