Heat pads

Hello everyone, hope you’re all staying warm and dry, can’t quite believe how much rain has fallen after that long, dry summer! Anyhow, I have recently bought a heating pad from Amazon and I absolutely love it,it’s super. However,my sister in law reckons that you should only use them for a very limited amount of time, such as an hour a day! Has anyone else been told this, can anyone explain why?! It’s so helpful for easing my pain but it’s not going to help much if I can only use it for such a limited amount of time- surely she’s mistaken? Any advice would be very much appreciated.❤️😫☹️🤞🤦🏻‍♀️

Where ever did your sister in law get her info from? It's rubbish. Remember the old hot water bottle and how much they helped? And still do.

Had heat pad for years and love it. A nice gentle heat does wonders.

Thanks, I thought it couldn’t be right but she seemed so sure and I couldn’t face getting into a huge discussion with her and looking like an idiot(again!)x

I've got Voltarol patches I wear mine 12hours as it says I've also got ibuprofen 24 hour ,these come in be at pads too.

If you don't want to use something plugged in their are also gel ones but they lose their heat

Pads really are the best

No,sorry I probably wasn’t very clear, I’m enquiring about the plug in variety. Thanks for taking the time to reply though.x

Hi KateMaguire , I think you’re Sister in law is wrong.

I have both a heat pad and a heated shoulder cape and use them all the time. They say on the label that they will cut out after an hour. That’s for safety reasons, but you just reset them. Read the instructions it will say on there.

Cheers.

GP. 😊😊

Thanks, I can’t find the instructions, I probably threw them away and I didn’t want to ask on Amazon and look like a nutter- at least on here I don’t mind looking like an idiot because it’s understood that you have a lot of these moments when you have fibro!

Look on Amazon for the same ones and read the Info on there.

Failing that, get Make/Model and Search Google.

If you've No Information Tag, just Google "Electric Heat Pads, Use".

Best of Luck,

Where on Earth did your Sister in law get her information from. SHE'S WRONG.

I've been using HEAT PADS for a few years now. They are much better than HOT WATER BOTTLES, because you can curl and bend them for easing pain anywhere on our body.

Our microwave is going off and on throughout the day, whenever i need them

You can also put them in the Freezer

I also have Raynards Syndrome and my hands get really hot and swollen.

So every night I take one out of the freezer and lay it by the side of my pillow. Oh ,bliss,i wouldn't be able to sleep otherwise, because now i can put my hands on them and they really cools them down..

In fact I have just bought another 4 of them to see me through the Winter..Perhaps your Sister in law was thinking of the Electric ones????.

I have an electric shoulder pad, but I don't use it very often because warming up the wheat bags are much easier to use, .😊

Bananas5 profile image
Bananas5 in reply toGjkas

You mean the pads filled with wheat?

I washed one. Not a good idea!!

KateMaguire profile image
KateMaguire in reply toBananas5

Didn’t get a chance to wash mine, the dog ate it while I was on the loo! x

Gjkas profile image
Gjkas in reply toBananas5

HAHAHA, Never tried washing one.

Glad you warned us about it.

Hope the wheat didn't come out of the bag and bung your washing machine up ??.x.

in reply toGjkas

I dropped mine in bath , thought it might start sprouting shoots ...🙄😆

Mine grew a corn crop, no, actually the dog bust it, thought it was a cuddly toy. x

KateMaguire in reply toGjkas

No, I meant the electric ones,I’ve got hot water bottles but when they get cool I don’t feel like getting out of bed and getting to the kitchen to boil the kettle to get myself back to bed,it undoes all the benefits I got from it in the first place! I tried the wheat ones but they proved irresistible to the dog because of the smell of porridge when they are heated🤦🏻‍♀️x

Gjkas profile image
Gjkas in reply toKateMaguire

HAHAHA ,youll have to keep the wheat bags where your Doggy can't get at them. Otherwise you could end up with a Hefty VET BILL.

I don't use Hot Water bottles either because I can't get back down stairs to refill them anyway. I do use the wheat bags during the day after ive warmed them up in the microwave. But I also take one out of the Freezer before I go bet so that I can put my hands on them before I go to sleep. They really help me then, because of my Raynards

and my hands get very swollen ,hot and painful. . I also have an electric shoulder pad that my Son bought me a few Christmases ago. Oh its lovely and it haves a safety cut out as well. So no worries there.

I expect your SISTER IN LAW was thinking about the Electric kind.??

She could be right.

KateMaguire in reply toGjkas

I've decided to just nod and agree with her while carrying on regardless- the general consensus seems to be that it's ok to use them for as long as you want to with no ill effects. xx

Gjkas profile image
Gjkas in reply toKateMaguire

Yes i would as well. Keep warm Kate, because ws all know that temperature changes can affect us.

I know that in the Summer, if i get too hot the pain gets worse.

Then in the Winter, if I get cold i can hardly move for the pain.

And we're gonna have a real cold winter this year. OOOOOÒH. 💭💭

Take Care .xx

TBH, I would think the major danger to heat pads would be to your bank balance when the Leccy bill comes in!

I’ve a electric throw from Qvc got it two years ago and keep it on for hours helps my joints great lol

KateMaguire profile image
KateMaguire

Thank you, I have been doing that and then get that pearl of wisdom from the sister in law! I thought it couldn’t be any different from any other heat source(hot water bottle and wheat pad, etc) but I wanted to reassure myself incase it was something that everyone else knew and I had missed!

KateMaguire profile image
KateMaguire

Thanks so much to everyone for replying to me,I am now reassured that I can use my electric heating pad for as long as I like without being at risk( quite what my sister in law thought I was at risk of still remains a mystery) so I am a happy(and toasty)bunny again! Have a lovely weekend. ××

Hi

Your sister in law might be thinking of years ago when they weren't checked properly so became a fire hazard. Not so now!! Mine keeps me snuggled up warm for 9 hours. I've been forbidden from using microwave heat pads , I burst one for keeping it on too long and burnt my stomach with another cis I'd kept it in too long!!! Xxxx

KateMaguire profile image
KateMaguire

Oh no,that sounds painful, myself and OH have been bickering because he says he thought I would never have an electric blanket and I'm explaining it is NOTHING like an electric blanket, moveable etc but now I can smugly point out that they are so much safer than anything else in the marketplace! Thank you(both for your reassuring answer and the extra ammunition in blanket wars)××

I use the microwaveable ones that stay hot for 16 hours. They are meant for pets but hey ho the dogs are always trying to get on the sofa so why shouldn't I use the pads designed for them ;)

KateMaguire profile image
KateMaguire in reply toDinkie

Thanks Dinkie, I am getting on well with this now I am reassured that SiL was trying to scare me 😳 but the dogs already snuggled up tight and edging closer and closer to the heat! xx

I’ve just had a look at the instructions for my Lidl electric heated shoulder cape, which are the same for the heated back pad. It says the 90 minute timer is a safety feature, presumably if you fall asleep, or leave it switched on when you’re not wearing it.

It says if you’re going to wear it for a prolonged time, put it on a low setting to avoid the risk of burning the skin.

I can send you a photo if it helps. 🙂

KateMaguire profile image
KateMaguire in reply toBemoresquirrel

Thanks so much, that’s very kind of you,in fact everyone has been really good replying to me. I’m using it for a while on the highest setting but once it eases the pain I am putting it onto the lower setting. Xx

I do the same, so I’m sure you will be fine. 😊 There’s certainly a lot of us on here using them.
