Hello there isn’t Gastroparesis more of a complication / symptoms of diabetes? I have not heard of this condition being linked to fibromyalgia but there may be those out there with Fibro and Gastroparesis

Hi Scoo1961,

Sorry to hear about your problems. I was reading your post and it made me think of the other day when I had nausea really badly that I was sat on the toilet with a bowl. I posted separately about this as I had also had dizziness and the shakes and later IBS symptoms.

This has happened a few times now and I have Fibro, acid reflux and type 2 Diabetes, among other things. One of those times almost after I ate a piece of bread, I vomited it back up in chunks (sorry about the vivid description), I ended up dehydrated, in hospital on a drip for a few hours before being sent home.

I was wondering if this might be a mild form of Gastroparesis.

Unfortunately, I haven't got anything more than that to help, but I hope you find something soon.

Best wishes,

A x

D1gD33per in reply toScoo1961

Do you mean Amitriptyline? I have this for my fibro but stopped taking it due to dry mouth. .... Which wasn't the cause it was obviously the Gastroparesis Dehydrating me.

I also have trouble taking my medications, I've been put on Liquid Metformin but they have not changed any of my other medications so I still struggle. The meds seem to sit in my chest area then froth up in my throat.

Thank you for your reply

I hope you feel better now all the best

I just had a barium meal at the hospital to see if I have gastroparesis but I’m still waiting for the results.

To be honest, I’m not sure if it’s linked to fibo. But do you have hyper mobility syndrome or EDS at all? It’s definitely linked to that.

I hope you get some helpful replies here.

I have fibro and gastroparesis but assumed that the gastro thing was related to my type 2 diabetes. I discovered that my stomach empties very slowly when I had to have an endoscopy. I was told not to eat anything at all for 8 hours or so, but they thought I had as I still had so much food sitting in there! I also have reflux, IBS and various food allergies.

Scoo1961 profile image
Scoo1961

Oh sorry to hear that .

Do you think. It’s related to the fibromyalgia

Optimystic profile image

I think it's more likely to be related to the diabetes because it's quite common with that I think. But you never know!

a member of my family has this n can be sick up to 40 times a day ,it is awful .Cannot tolerate food many times as sits there for days in the stomach or suffers with terrible diarrhoea .worse than any IBS I have had. Stomach just stops working now being considered for a pace maker .The liquid food that are prescribed taste awful . Only thing is a watered down smoothie without any dairy ,has kept them going until the 3rd day when it Heinz chicken soup without the chicken bits. It is a living nightmare . I truly wish you well as breaks my heart seeing the suffering that goes on here in this house

Had fibro for years with IBS as most fibros do. Then, suddenly things changed. Too full too quick, Every meal felt like I'd eaten Christmas dinner +++. Dr Baffled, other than I have IBS and am stressing. Take the 'slow your tum down anti cramping' meds. Well that was awful, obviously! My tum didn't need slowing. My GP said ugh typical! Of course the meds work and they dont make it worse!! Er they did? Took years to figure. The way I reacted to the meds should have been a clue to any DR that something was amiss. I'm not diagnosed, but given there is no cure, I'm no longer worried.

An unhealthy fibre free diet was the answer, then low fibre diet when tum is settled. Also lots of quality probiotics. (and as much fibre to feed em as you dare, Probably not much). The no fibre/extremely low fibre diet has to be your go to, when things are bad. Get your tum settled, then back to gently eating more healthily again.

Most folks think more fibre will speed up a slow transit, but for us, it brings transit to a nauseating and painful halt. Til GP struck, I loved my veggies and fruit and pulses, had a super 'healthy' diet. 5+ per day. Most folks will not understand GP. I nearly wasted away trying to figure it. . Hope you are able to figure yours.

Cucumber? Maybe peeled until you get used to it.

Probiotics. Lots of them to get your digestion happening.

It is really hard finding what suits you.

Rice is good. Rice crispies, boiled rice, rice cakes.

Peanut butter is supposed to be good but I cant eat peanuts.

I think gut bacteria is a major issue for many of us. Food festers without the bacteria to process it all.

I eat bananas. Careful if diabetic though.

I went back to basics Gastroparesis diet wise. Very low fibre. Taking Magnesium citrate to keep guts regular I used quarter teaspoon ish. And good probiotics. Found those with added fibre or prebiotics as they call it upset my tum. Better to rely on the little bit of fibre from the cucumber or banana to feed the new bacteria.

Then once your tum settles start adding more foods again. You need to experiment to see what suits you. I find cheese is OK but lots say it's too fatty. I find meat is ok if well cooked and in small quantities. Anything too chewy is bad. Eggs are nice. Fish good. Easy on the tum. Potatoes not too much. Then a tiddly bit of maybe carrot etc. Mushrooms are low fibre. Courgettes esp if peeled and the middle removed.

I eat avocado and find that easy. Been adding more and more lately. Every now and then, Tum says, Too much and I have to dial back on veggies again.

I find fruit a problem. Bananas are the one thing I manage.

Is your tum damaged through your diabeties? Or just ideopathic like most folks?

I do sympathise. This is such a rotten uncomfortable condition. And anti social too as our foods festers and ferments often causing oodles of gas. (leaving us red faced) Don't bottle it up else you will have tummy ache on top of a full bloated tum.

If you experiment you will find some foods a definate no no. Others will cause issues sometimes. Hopefully you will find some safe foods you like and can start making some progress.

Mm, 6.7 stone, I was skeletal. Not a pretty sight. And very conscious of it. Folks thought I was anorexic. Wanted to feed me. Imagine the horror?

I took magnesium last thing before bed. Ready for morning!

If it doesn't work you can do what I did. Take a bit more? Hm. Find your tolerance.

I started mid evening, super constipated and uncomfortable. Had some magnesium. Nothing happened and I really wanted to go? Yes, there were tears. I seriously wondered if I might end up in hospital.

So I took another dose. or two? I cant remember. I was a little gung ho I remember that. Well, after the last dose there was a rumbling. And the rumblings got pretty intense. You get my meaning? Lucky I had nothing better to do than spend the rest of the evening trotting to the loo hey?

I guess it lasted 2 hrs tops? And after that I felt nicely cleared out. And determined to have a little more respect for the humble magnesium powder.

Compare that 2 hrs to the several days spent with a randomly jippy tum courtesy of the blessed Movicol. I was too scared to leave the house for two days! and then it was more days before the the gripes stopped. And after all that, I was still feeling constipated. I'd confided to my GP Movicol was 'rubbish' and doing nothing more than giving me tummy ache. He said take More. MORE MORE MORE! So I did. I don't recommend it. Think my GP is a sadist, or a madman?

Overdo magnesium and you will trot for maybe two hours. Movicol? Who knows when the pain will end. Better still, don't overdo either?

I started on the biocult and then tried others. Building up a variety. It is a long road to getting better. Getting rid of stress helped a lot. And having money to buy decent food.

The books recommend bone broth. Can you face that? I like soup but bones cooking all day in the house, the smell defeats me. I wish I had a Nana to bring some round! I've even spoken to folks that have done really well on it. I take the collagen powder instead. Tasteless and yummy hidden in my hot chocolate.

Keep reading. You are bound to come across the advice you need eventually.

I am still careful about how much fibre. I can only imagine your pain using psyillium!!! No-one warns about the danger of Fibre for some people.

I take a methylated multi vitamin in case my B vits aren't assimilated properly. I think it helps. It is in a plastic brown pot and label.

We need Vit B for digestion and with poor digestion we cant assimilate Vit B. But if we fail to get the B vits the digestion will get worse making B vits even harder to obtain. Hm! The methylation process make the B more easy to assimilate.

Hope the Magnesium Citrate is helping now.
