Constant Thick Mucus in Throat and Nose. GP don't help me. Feels serious but they are not taking me serious. Feeling like there is no hope.

Since getting Fibromyalgia and Diabetes (MY THIRD YEAR FOR BOTH) I have had a constant dry mouth and nose, I went to GP told me It was amitriptyline/allergys/infection and lots more. so many anti biotics and I went on a drug holiday and it didn't help.

Now I have started producing really thick saliva and get so much mucous on my throat in my mouth and behind my nose.

Tests keep showing negative so my doctor now just says its a symptom of Fibro and I have to deal with it. (If you look at my older posts you see me complaining about these.)

I am now to the point I can no longer sleep because I can no longer breathe at night. GP is doing nothing and I am feeling suicidal.

There must be something that will help

I have tried

+Steaming

+Drug Holiday

+Antibiotics

+antihistamines

+beconase and 200 other sprays

+Constant Drinking of Water (DOES NOT HELP)

many more

I don't know what else to do. I feel I cannot take this anymore. Its over riding all my symptoms. Id rather have my pains any day compared to this,

Its frightening Especially when both airways Close.

There must be someone who has this same problem.

P.S. My application for PIP last Feb is still ongoing and I am still waiting to hear an appeal date. (to all the people who read my old posts)

What a rotten gp to just stick the fibro label on this problem, I wonder if you have tried the nasal dilator you can buy to stop snoring? IT might keep your nostrels open to help. Can I ask if the mucus is discloured or just thick clear yerky?? have you been chekced for COPD (thats a spiromitor test you blow into a tube).. Come back to us others may have help to offer.

Hi Nurse Gladys Thanks for replying. No i have not had a test for COPD my doctor doesnt think there needs to be one. I had a chest xray last week waiting on results but he said he guarantees they will be clear. Which I do believe but still there is something wrong and its completly destroying my quality of life. (the little bit i had left)

My mucus varies in colour, Sometimes yellowy/green sometimes dark green and sometimes clear but i think the clear stuff is thick Saliva.

I am thinking to visit the hospital a+e but am scared to be fobbed off. i feel alone in this like theres nothing i can do.

There must be something to help

I heard guifenasin but its very expensive.

Thanks for your help

edit: no have not tried the nasal dilator. ill give it a go thanks

in reply toD1gD33per

after your chest xray if your gp doesnt offer you an anti biotic to release all the viral mucus then I would agree to present at A&E and tell them you are having trouble breathing.. my son had the virus and I took him A&E coz he has asthma, he had migraines for the first time in his life age 36 from the stubborn mucus that was blocking his airways.. Dont be afraid to go its what they are there for.

If it's bronchial you could ask to try carbosistein (mucodyne) to thin mucus build-up. Making sure your fluid intake is sufficient also should help thin it.

You have my sympathy. I have has ths to a certain extent all of my life but since fibro struck it has been twice as bad. It is called Perennial rhinitis and is difficult to treat.

I find the following helps.

Cleaning Nasal Passages With Salt Water

Instead of using a decongestant medicine to relieve a stuffy nose, you can try using a saltwater solution (saline solution). This solution may help you for a short period of time by:-

To make the solution, mix ½ teaspoon (2.5 g) of salt and ½ teaspoon (2.5 g) of baking soda in 1 cup (237 mL) of distilled water (at room temperature). If you use tap water, boil it first to sterilize it, and then let it cool until it is lukewarm. You may also purchase a saline solution at your pharmacy.

Gently squirt the solution into your nose. Aim the water toward the back, not the top, of your head. The water will run through the nasal passages if you tilt your head slightly to one side it will come out of the other nostril. Or spit out through your mouth. It will not hurt you if you swallow some of the water.

The stuff it clears us amazing. If you do this before bed it can make it easier to breathe.

I did find when it became extremely thick and infected I did have to have an antibiotic which helped the infection but the discharge still remains. I also find sucking a Jakemans cough sweet helps with breathing and moving the catarrh but it has gone the ones in the black packet.

If you do find something that helps please let me know!x

If it is sibo then antibiotics will likely help a little then it comes back worse as bad bacteria take over after treatment. Hope you find something to help it's horrid I know. Also any food sentitivities can cause tummy issues causing GERD

hi d1g really sorry to hear about your nightmare I am having trouble with my doc not giving me right help. You really must try and see a different doctor, at your surgery who could be more sympathetic. x

We are quite close in area think like 12 miles away. Must be the doctors around here. they are all deluded. Someone has recommended a new GP for me so I am gonna try that.

ps I remember before you telling me to change gps a whole year ago I still haven't lol

uggycat profile image
uggycat in reply toD1gD33per

hello digger glad you are going to try. well I live in wealthy area so think some of the docs think they are posh docs above themselves, think the lower classes are there to be treated like naughty children. If they think one is up the pecking order, they defer to them completely deluded some of course are good. and of course more money one has can afford to go private. although think the NHS is a lot superior. but think is if you fall out with doc at least can go private. which gives one more leeway to let rip at the doctor who has not been best to you and just walk away.

My heart goes out to you. Please do go to the emergency room if you are struggling to breathe.

I know that's what I thought but I had anti biotics and the swab test came up negative

in reply toD1gD33per

If your testing for roast beef and yorkie puds and it's a chicken salad well it's not going to show up!

Can be bodies run down also

denvajade profile image

Hi there do you have acid reflux? This can create mucus as the body is trying to protect the acid from burning throat etc. 🙈

D1gD33per That medicine can take up to 3 weeks to take full effect so give it a little more time.x

Don't think omeprazole will work. If it's gerd you need good bacteria.

Will do , i think its an easy way out for drs to say everything is connected to fibro , trouble is they may miss something im sure my gp is sick to death of me , but hey thats what they get paid for . Try to keep positive i know its not easy .

Hello, could you insist that your doctor refers you to the ENT (ear, nose and throat) consultant at your local hospital, tell your doctor you would like a second opinion!!? Good luck xxx

Laura09 profile image

After 2 years of this problem and being fobbed off my nasal sprays they referred me to ENT specialist , there was 6 month waiting list but I did drag myself there yesterday I was gonna go as I'm so tired of this pain in agony my body my legs and doc just tells me eat better sleep better get to a gym and I do all those things but hey ho ...but at the ENT turns out I had rhinitis so given steroid sprays to use every day twice a day for 3 months and douche the nose with salt water and bicarb of soda . I will get a letter soon to go back for tests then they see me again in about 3 months , sometimes surgery is required but I doubt if they will if they can help it...good luck xxx

D1gD33per in reply toLaura09

thank you I am going to push to see the ENT I have already tried steroid sprays though but never used the saline at the same time..... I have read online to use saline first or the steroids don't work.

x

Let me know the results please xxx

Hello D1gD33per

I think phlebo123 has given you some great advice to consider about speaking to the GP about a ENT referral and anything to help with this until your appointment. I personally would not suggest going to A & E unless of course the symptoms cause shortness of breath or any exclusion to your airway (basically any issues with breathing). The NHS are currently experiencing a 'Winter Crisis' and therefore only asking people to consider their reasons for visiting A&E especially if it is something the GP can deal with.

I wanted to also draw your attention to this post below as I notice your post is unlocked. All the information you need if you wish to lock it;

I hope you find out the reasons for this as it appears to be causing you some distress

All the best

Emma :)

Sounds grim. I use Olbas oil on my pillow and a tissue which helps to keep my nose from bunging up. It does work. Do you open a window at night ? A cool airy room will help congestion whereas a warm airless one will make it worse.

Could be gerd? Overgrowth of bad bacteria fermenting. acid or even gas coming up irritates the throat n mucus tries to protect . trying probiotics can help. Sugar free diet. If you are desperate like you say it's worth a go. Look up sibo lots of good advice online.
