Visit to Pain Clinuc

Well I went along to Pain Clinic today to see if the pain management course is for me. I must say that I am quietly optimistic that they might help me to manage my pain and fatigue. I don’t know what I expected but there was about 12 of us there and we were all suffering along similar lines. I asked one if the people who was taking the session ( a psychologist, I think ) if they would concentrate on the fatigue as well as the pain and she said definitely yes. I have my son’s wedding in July and really want to be well ( I’m not expecting to be pain free ) just able to cope with the day. She said that was a great thing to aim towards in this course. It’s 11 weeks , three hours each week. Quite a commitment but I feel motivated today. If you would like, I could tell you each week what we cover . Very briefly! I don’t start till March. Anyway, sorry got long text but I often text when I’m feeling down so just thought I’d like to post something a bit more positive. I hope everyone has had as good a day as possible . Xx

Lol! Yes I’ll have to really try to concentrate! They did say that they’ll be giving us lots of different strategies and some will be better for some individuals than others. I’m really hoping for advice and tips on good pacing . Xx

Good luck!

Morning

Finished a pain course Oct 2017

Mine was 9am/4pm

Over 6 weeks I think your shorter hours would be achievable

A psychologist, physio, and a phyciatric nurse the class was a real mixed bag motorbike accident stroke fibromyalgia all lovely people by week 3 you feel bonded as a group

It’s nice to be around others in your situation and be part of something

Everything is covered

I’m going to see a nurologist 31st jan as my fatigue has got worst spent 4 years seeing specialists diagnosed with fibromyalgia cfs

Had a flare up after pain management but it was not the course I pushed myself at home for weeks before

Any positive ie the wedding is a lovely thing to aim for

There are no negatives coming from the teachers you do get negatives from patients my only advice is to try and not take any notice it’s them having a bad day venting

Wishing you all the best

Sam

Thanks for your detailed reply and for selling the positives of the course that you were on. I too am struggling with the fatigue probably more than the pain as it’s so completely debilitating. I hope that the neurologist is able to help with your fatigue. We are all intelligent enough to know that when we push ourselves too hard , we suffer but it’s so hard to slow down to the pace that we seem to have to go at to have some kind of a life! I really hope that you get the help that you deserve. Xx

Hi, I have been on two pain management courses. One in Liverpool, 4 full days a week for 6 weeks and one in Bath, 4 weeks, @ the Bath hospital for rheumatic diseases. They are very good, but they treat your ailments psychologically, as the ‘new’ way of thinking, is that pain is felt in the brain, so they work on your perception of pain. You will come away with new coping skills, and more optimism but in no way take your health problems away. I wish you luck, I’m sure you will gain something from it

I’m hoping to learn some coping skills. Realise that the pain is here for keeps but maybe stressing less about it will lower the pain a notch. Fingers crossed 🤞. Xx
