I used amitriptyline in the past for shingles pain but couldn't cope with the hangover effects the following day so GP swapped me onto nortriptyline which worked well for pain & sleep but not the drowsy effect the following day, so when the consultant suggested amitriptyline for my fibro I asked for nortriptyline instead.

Hi, I find it helps me to relax and sleep. It must take away some of the aches and pains. I can cope with the side effects.,it does make me drowsy the next day but I don't work and I don't drive. I take two hours before sleep.

I have been on amitriptyline for years now. They work well for me. I take 2 a hour before bed to help me sleep 😴. I think that I am quite lucky as I don’t have any side affects. xxx

10mg so I have 2 before bedtime. I have been on 50mg when I was suffering badly with headaches and I reduced them down to 20mg now just to help me sleep. xxx

I don't like Amitriptylline at all. Used it many years ago for depression, the muscle relaxant works well to help sleep, but as I have mild incontinence issues it became a liability. Nowadays I have Nortryptilline , less sedative effect, I find, but still relaxes the muscles well enough.

It does mess your hormones up also as lady near me was on it put her into premature menopause in males it mess with T and put weight on.

Both myself and friend had heart palpitations and he had what thought was start of prostate C! as his dad had that really bad so in a bit of a panic.

Had to stop with hallucinations.

I have taken it for ~3 years now. Found it to be a complete life changer... I now sleep full nights & it's had a good effect on my energy levels overall & I don't want to sleep during the day. It does take a good few weeks to get used to, but you quickly get past the drowsy phase if you keep going. I would highly recommend it if you are waking up a lot or finding it difficult to get to sleep. It is supposed to help with pain levels, but I can't say I've found it made a difference. Hope that helps. Happy Christmas! T x

It was like this for me too, but it wasn’t pain I was experiencing it was horrible sensations, like prickly after affects of stinging nettles.

Hi Hhhhuikki,

My daughter who is 19 was prescribed Amitripyline by her GP and has been taking it for over a year now, she's on 50mg at night. She would take them about 2 hours before bed, It helps with a few hours sleep but not with pain. They give her a very dry mouth but she definitely couldn't do without them. GP had tried other tablets but Amitripyline seem to be the only one's that doing something.

She has been waiting from November 2016 for a Rheumatology appointment, hopefully she'll get word in the New year.

Was prescribed to help me sleep. It certainly worked but had to stop using because I really struggled to wake up to get ready for work. I manage to sleep ok now without it.

Not very effective, felt it did not do anything. did not get much sleep on it, in fact I was more awake. Was very hallucinating at first at that slowly calmed down. I am currently not taking it anymore
