I have just been diagnosed with fibromyalgia although it has been going on a while. I have been prescribed naproxen which doesn't seem to be doing anything & amitriptyline which has helped me to sleep but I feel groggy the next day, is this usual?

Amitryptiline is a good one if you can tolerate it

I don't take amitriptyline but others who do often take it earlier in the evening say 7pm which helps prevent any morning grogginess. It is according to what is the main symptom of your fibro as to what may help. I take Ibuprofen as one of my drugs but that is for osteo. As fibro isn't technically an inflammatory condition Naproxen may only be having very limited effect. The one drug that has helped me the most is Pregablin (Lyrica) which has helped halve the burning and shooting pains which is the main part do my fibro. Have you had a chance to look at our mother site Fibromyalgia Action UK as it lists treatments for first do both by medication but also by alternatives like acupuncture, etc.x

I’ve had amitriptyline, naproxen, pregabalin, tramadol, Dihyrocodeine amongst others. Was on Naproxen for about 10 years in combination with omeprazole and my gall bladder disintegrated and I developed diverticular disease. The Gastro consultant stopped the anti inflammatory meds.

SweetnSour it’s been ok using a combination of tramadol, dihydrocodeine, pregabalin, paracetamol and ropinirol. I have 10 medical conditions that are managed by medication so it’s finely balanced. Doesn’t help having COPD, Asthma and severe Sleep Apnoea as that limits the amount of analgesic meds I can take.

I was on Amitriptyline until very recently to help with my sleep, try taking it a bit earlier in the evening maybe around 6pm to help with the grogginess the next morning. You may have to play around with the timing a bit to see what works for you. I've only stopped because I seem to be unusually sensitive to it and even at a low dose the side effects were leaving me unhappy. But it did help me sleep!
