My GP said the only chance for permanent relief is decompression in the back. I sympathise.

I get this from time to time and know which yoga type exercises I need to do to improve. Make sure you invest 30 minutes 5times a day to do them.

In the meantime have you considered using a tens machine??

I had sciatic pain for several months before seeing a chiropractor who helped me. But it still took months of chiropractic treatment for the pain to go completely away. Have you tried using a small pillow between your knees when you sleep? That helped me a lot, and so far I've had 8 months without sciatic or lower back pain, the longest stretch in the past 10 years. Best to avoid narcotic pain killers if at all possible. Even when they work, they don't help for long term use without causing other problems, addiction being just one example. Good luck, Roy!

I feel your pain, literally! I have been suffering this bout of sciatica for a week now. Nothing I do or take is making any difference. Do I try to keep mobile and push through the pain, which is what I have been doing or do I rest it??? Driving me mad, completely fed up. A Dural Ectasia showed up in an MRI but a spine specialist at hospital dismissed this completely!! Rheumatologist thought this was the cause of sciatica hence sending me to the spine specialist. He was so rude and abrupt I left in tears. Nearly a year later and I am still in pain.
