First grandchild due in three months and so I thought I'd do some knitting. I started one cardigan (3-6 months with a pattern which was not a good idea!!) so finished it but didn't try to put it together. Decided to knit one without a pattern and put that one together first for practise. Last time I knitted anything was in 1984 and I don't recall having to knit the button band separately, but that is what my patterns say and so I duly tried knitting the two fronts then one button band and sewing it on.. I looked at my knitting for dummies book and on the net too, but let's just say one front piece has headed for the bin. Ready to put the rest of it there too but am not a quitter.
My embroidery group had three expert knitters but they have all left and I don't know any others. Any experts here please who could tell me if it would be ok just to knit the button band along with the front even though it will be different needle size?
Seriously fed up as my hands are bad at the moment so have rested them for a few days and decided to have a go at making the cardigan this afternoon and it was wasted time grrrrrr.
PS is it still July or have I missed a few weeks???

Wonderful news about the first grandchild. I am hopeless it took me the best part of 4 months to knit a cot blanket and I had to get my husband to work out the pattern, lol. Mind you she did use it for both her babies. There are quite a few marvellous knitters on the forum so I am sure someone will be along shortly to help.x
Am also knitting a cot blanket in squares - quick to knit, but has to be sewn together. Supposed to be for beginners, but then it says crochet the pieces together! Well done you for doing yours.
Crochet I gave up on all together but there are some proper whizz kids on the forum for that.
My friend used to do those massive king size quilts with all her spare bits of DK wool and then used to crochet them together. They were tremendously warm but very heavy. I can remember her husband telling me that once he had the flu and couldn't get warm so she put a finished one over him. He was very weak from the flu and when he tried to get up to go to the loo it had literally pinned him to the bed. Mind you she left him soon afterwards perhaps she was trying to kill him, lolx
Hi Hidden Oh great news with new grandchild coming, how exciting for you. I haven't knitted for a long time but from what I remember, its quite normal to knit the button band separate & with smaller needles because it needs to be quite tight knit .
As for knitting - I am the worst person to ask. I never got past knitting a scarf about 100 years ago! Feels like that anyway.
Have you tried looking on YouTube for some help? There are so many people posting videos on all sorts of things now, with tutorials on how to do just about anything you can think of.
I know you're not keen on social media as such, but YouTube is really good for learning so many things.
Hi, I have always found it easier to knit the band on at the same time. I guess it's down to personal preference really. I just made sure the last stitch was a purl it just give it a little neater sewed on look. Congratulations on the grand babe. Wonderful news xx
That is wonderful news about your first grandchild but I am so genuinely sorry to read that you are having problems with your knitting. I want to sincerely wish you all the best of luck and please take care of yourself my friend.
You would be able to but you will be using two different size needles have you tried picking the stitching up for buttonhole band after the garment is finished . Have a look on line I am sure they will have some information for you I love my knitting i am always doing something good luck
Id give up on cardigans---way too complicated , but then the most complex thing I've knitted are hand/wrist warmers I send to a South African charity !
My daughter really cherished the little wrapping blankets she as given-- especially tiny ones for her daughter who was born at 6 months.
Congratulations Rosewine, it's wonderfully exciting time. Knitting front band and cardi as one is fine. Just check where the band will finish and be aware there could be decreasing for neck shaping. All the best
