Silly question...

Hi all, bit of a silly question here but does anyone else notice that in the area where there's a lot of pain that you get unexplained itching?

Every day since I've had pain and numbness involving my spine I keep itching the affected area cause it feels like bugs crawling under my skin.

Hope all are well today and thanks in advance for any responses :-)

No not a silly question really- I had similar itchng but it was allergy to something I was taking, strangley I didn't, itch everywhere but some long term antihistamines calmed it down _I took

Loratidine for skin allergies.

This is called formication. It is caused by nerve damage, among other things. I find it very unpleasant. Luckily I get it on my arm so I can quickly look to make sure there isn't actually a bug on me. It's associated with numbness rather than pain for me and I find rubbing the area very hard can get rid of it. Not quite so easy if it's in an area that is very painful or difficult to reach.

I keep asking my wife to check if there's a rash or anything but there never is

Yes I get this a lot, in fact I have it as we speak. It can be anywhere for me but not necessarily where I have pain. And as you say often there is nothing to see, no rash, no swelling or anything visible. Most irritating! xx

Hello I get this problem a lot mostly along my arms either at the tops or along my forearms, very rarely both together. n the past I have scratched at the areas until they bleed trying to stop the itching.

During the Spring and Summer months I take antihistamine for hayfever and they do seem to decrease the itching a very little but not for long.

In desperation I had been using icepacks to freeze the area which does work but I don't reccomend it to anyone.. A few months ago I was in the chemist looking along the shelves and saw anti-itch creams, Lanacane and Vagisil. I bought one of each and tried them on the itchy areas.

They both work! I find the Vagisil cream the most effective and now always keep a tube hidden in my bag, and apply it as soon as the itching starts. I do hope that this can help you as it has helped me.

My best wishes to you and all fellow fibro fighters

Yes I get it on my back mostly of a night for some reason - I have invested in a good telescopic back-scratcher which works a treat! x

I use a brass toasting fork.

I find Eurax works quite well, the big tubes from the supermarkets work out the cheapest.

Yes I do, I try to avoid touching the area as that leads to pain, we cant win sometimes xx

Prone to eczema so avoid scratching if possible as this only aggravates the itchy feeling and may be the nerve damage that is behind it anyway.

I get a lot of pain in my upper back muscles and the itching in the center of my back between my should blades, just where i cant reach on the odd days when my arms arnt playing up i use a toasting fork as a back scratcher but most of the time i have to bear scratch up against doors walls ect.

Hi Hidden

I am so genuinely sorry to read this and as furgus says it could be related to nerve damage? I have pasted an excerpt below form the *NCBI website relating to this issue:

*Like neuropathic pain, only a fraction of patients with these neurological conditions develop chronic itch. It appears that neuropathic itch and pain, like many other chronic conditions, are likely complex conditions in which a specific trigger, neuronal damage, increases risk for symptoms in individuals with underlying susceptibility.

If this persists or gets any worse I would have it checked out just to remove other medical conditions from the equation. I want to sincerely wish you all the best of luck and please take care of yourself my friend.

All my hopes and dreams for you

Ken

Yeah I get it too top of back where I can't reach if hubby not here I use an old long bladed kitchen knife which isn't used now for food as it's blunt but boy does it work pure heaven and it moves as you get rid of one itch it travels think it's the nerve endings - and sometimes my feet too - now that's one place to try and beat the itch I can tell you. I think it's a combination of dry skin on back as you can't really moisturise there and meds plus as you get older your skin becomes thinner. Hope you all have an itchless and comfy night. 😘😘😘🤗🤗🤗
