Hi everyone, I havent been on here for a while but thought I would just ask for some advice.

I saw my GP this morning and he prescribed amitriptyline.

Can anyone tell me whether this has helped them and any possible side effects I should expect.

Thank you

Hi, ive been on it 5months 40mg a night, apart from a dry mouth I don't suffer too much.

I do have extreme fatigue but I put that down to the Fibro and Rheumatoid disease I have. I would ask your Gp if you are concerned there are other meds they can try. I hope this can be of help. Marie

Hi, they really help me pain and sleep wise. Can make you feel a bit groggy in the morning. I take mine around 7pm. X

I agree, take it early evening, if I forget and take it late I'm very groggy the next day x

I take one to help me sleep, no later than 7 otherwise I am groggy during the morning. Am supposed to take 3 at night, but when I did I was zonked for most of the day. Not sure that they help with the pain as I don't take prescribed dose. I also suffer with a very dry mouth and an awful taste. Hope they help you, we all seem to react differently to medication, which is probably another reason doctors find it so hard to prescribe for us Fibros.

Hi, I take Amitriptyline 75mg a night and it is the only medication I take other than over the counter painkillers. I find it works for me and I don't actually feel too groggy in the mornings with it which is good since I have to get up for work. I do suffer with the dry mouth but always keep a drink handy and have some sugar free fruit sweets for when I am out and about. It seems to be one of those drugs which works really well for some but is absolutely no help for others. It is worth giving a try but do take it a couple of hours before bed as mentioned above. Good luck hope you find it helps.

Thanks everyone for your comments. Fibro is not too bad at the moment but just aching joints and fatigue. One of my main problems is depression. I have had this for years.

I think this medication is to help with both my fibro and depression. I will see how it goes. It is just 10mg per day at the moment. Good point about taking it early evening, I wasnt sure what time to take it.

I also have a B12 supplement so I hope they are alright together. The GP should know.

I will keep you posted.

hi their i'm diabetic and i'm on them for the pain i get they do help whilst they kick in but like another medication they where off but if your taking them one a day like me i can only taking mine at night because i'm also on Diazepam as well hope this helps take care bigalan and welcome back

I was also prescribed this and felt awful and had a week of total nightmare. Feeling low, thought I was useless, crying and even depressed didn't feel like I was me. Stopped it immediately and with two days felt sort of human again.

Hi.

I take three x 10mg a night, which my doctor prescribed for nerve pain and to help with sleep. I wondered if they helped, but when I tried reducing the dose noticed an increase in my pain levels. They work for me and I haven't noticed any side effects.

I do not take this medication as i have a derivative called Nortriptyline. However, I want to genuinely and sincerely wish you all the best of luck with this drug.

All my hopes and dreams for you

Thanks again for your comments. I took my first tablet last night. I slept quite well, I woke once in the night and my head was spinning. I went to the loo then back to sleep. I dont feel too groggy this morning, well no more than normal.

Im wondering if 10mg will make much difference anyway. My GP said I need to build up slowly. I will see how it goes.

Have a good day everyone.

Hi Golfer15, I've taken it for a while now, I did stop because I wasn't sure it was helping, but after a month of not taking it, all the pain was back with a vengeance. So I think it helps some people, but not everyone. Good luck with everything. MariLiz

Hi ive been on it if you want to keep using it vary the doses sometimes not taking to taking more as A the body will get used to it B it has many unpleasant side effects!

One being heart palpitations but also weight gains, prostate problems.also breast growth! in males.(one of the top in the list for it),hormone problems(in females it increases T levels in males it lowers it.Know a lady that was on it and put her into premature menopause!.

I and my friend both had heart palpitations he thought he was having prostate problems worried as his dad has/had prostate cancer!

It works for a while then either need to increase dose or stop or like most of the meds/pills many on here shove down there throats just add to the problems so seek more meds to deal with the added problems of last ones many of these meds stay in the body long term as store in fat layers then you take something else later they combine to cause problems which not tested against each other.

Personally i'd steer well clear of it and find something better but each to there own as im sure it was being on it that caused many other problems/was start off?

What i think is best for many etc is to stop all these meds for a while so the body is clear then reassess them and sure you'd feel much better rather than just keep adding more and more so increase problems for them selves.

Bit like constantly buying new things for fridge but not using older stuff up till one day fridge busts at seams and older stuff goes bad and smells.

Ask to have your hormone levels checked (all not just T) as many M&F's have poor progesterone levels as low P is a cause of PMT in females as E dom and can cause things like depression etc it's very over looked but it's one of the important hormones as E&T come from it it also works on prostate problems.

But they don't like you knowing that as want you to take expensive meds both in cost and to your health as another Gynecomastia causer check the net i do have a website list if you like of things on it.

But if you need any help/info give me a shout as been in the position and some!!!

Hi there,

I am on Amitryptyline. I started off on a low dose but recently had it increased. it does take the worst of the pain away so you can go to sleep. It does send you to sleep very quickly so don't take them if you still have stuff to do in the evening. you can still feel a bit groggy in the morning but that does reduce once you get used to them xxx

One thing ive been on is acupuncture seems ok and works from what it seems get it at the RLNH hospital queen square
