Hi

You need to see your GP and ask to be referred to a Rheumatologist. A doctor can diagnose you if they know about Fibromyalgia and the Trigger Point test. (** correction - Tender Point test) **

I've not heard of a Pain Clinic diagnosing it, but some others here might have.

Hello Bluemermaid,

If I may, it is the Tender Point Test which can be used to diagnose Fibro but not always done so; as Trigger Points are actually associated with Myofascial Pain Syndrome. People with Fibro often have MPS alongside Fibro & more recently it has been debated again I believe about whether Tender points are Trigger points! So it is easily confused.

This is taken from an older post discussing this where Lindsey Middlemiss (founder of FibroAction) explains further;

The tender point test is simply a way to check for the widespread hypersensitivity to pain that is characteristic of Fibro. Many doctors don't bother with putting their patients through the test and prefer to use patient descriptions. For example, many people with Fibro say hugs hurt, or that the weight of the duvet at night hurts, or that banging your knee on the desk or stubbing a toe is excruciating for far longer than is normal. These are all descriptions of hyperalgesia.

The tender point test is useful but only if done correctly. Many doctors cannot differentiate between tender points (which do not feel different to them) and trigger points (which should feel like a lump, restriction or hard area on examination). This means that even if they know all about the tender point test, they can't carry it out reliably

Hope this helps :)

I agree with Bluemermaid.If you do not get a good GP giving diagnosis it normally falls to rheumatologist to definitely give confirmation However if we the patients raise more awareness then more medical staff will be knowledgeable to help in future.

Hi molind

Yes the pain clinic can diagnose, it was my doctor at the pain clinic I was referred to that diagnosed me.

Would also still advise referrals to rheumatology.

Hope this helps

Kind regards

Nicola
