I have probably asked this already and had replies but i cannot recall.my weight has increased by about 2 stone and it IS all abdominal and I still cant see how it can be bloating-not at that amount.and considering my dr only first mentioned bloating a couple of months ago when suffered for over 2 years.

Hi I all so have put two stone in weight on. My GP keeps saying lose weight will help you ,so thinking it was me being lazy I joined slimming world, guess what I am sticking to the diet and in a month I have lost get ready for it drum roll please......................two pounds, everyone else one stone etc. My GP says keep up the good work, what good work I said he said losing is better then putting on. But I ask you two pound!

anbuma profile image

my rheumy commented that I had gained 11kgs in 7 years and needed to diet.put him right saying it was in 2 years and I couldn't diet cos I don't eat anything-no cakes biscuits snacks puddings and little fried stuff- so how can I i diet.until someone sorts my swollen abdomen out then the weight will never go.

Hi

Ive been a size 8 forever. In the last few months I've gone to a size 10, then a 12 now I can hardly fit into a size 14. The problem is it's just around my stomach. I look seven months pregnant. Because I'm petite everywhere else and have learned tricks to hide it, no one will take me seriously. I've got to the point where I won't look in the mirror anymore.

I've seen various doctors who have all said different things.

I'm already seriously depressed and this is dragging me down so much it's unbelievable.

Do any of you feel the same?

After a meal (and not a particularly big one) I'm so uncomfortable I don't know what to do.

I've been told it's fat (in which case why isn't it everywhere), I was tested for Ovarian cancer but got the all clear, I've been told mostly that it is my age (I'm 52), and that all women my age get a thickening of the waist. But personally I think going from a 26" waist to a 39" waist is a bit more than that. I've been going through the menopause for about 4/5 years so why suddenly would I put on all that weight in just one place. I've put on well over a stone in weight :((

in reply toanbuma

I honestly barely eat hardly anything at all. I don't eat breakfast or lunch and only have a small meal in the evening. How can you cut down on that!? I lurch from one major problem to another which means every time something goes wrong my appetite plunges through the floor and I feel too sick to eat. Also, I don't know about you, but my stomach is solid and hard. If it was fat wouldn't it be soft? Please let me know how you get on tomorrow morning. I've given up on asking my doctor. Good luck x

Junk food in your diet is not the only source of weight gain, I do not eat chips, burgers or other Junk style food, take aways or home cooked, some people think that they eat a healthy diet, but is it a balanced diet??, do you eat bread and or cake, the flour etc.. in them are known to cause medical or health issues like stomach bloating (you dont need to be a coeliac for them to affect you) try cutting wheat products for a week you may be suprised by the results.

I also know of a lot of people that have fruit/veg smoothies, they don't add sugar or anything else and assume that for that reason it is healthy, but ones you cook or blend fresh/frozen fruit you are releasing sugars that can be just as harmful as putting 6+ t/spoons of sugar in your tea/coffee.

I have lost 2 stone in 9 weeks on the slimming world diet, I am surprised as I can do little exercise and thought this would hold me back. I go to the meetings every week for weigh-in and always try to stay for the chat and see how everyone else is doing, getting new ideas for mealtimes etc... and to listen to some confessions from the people that have strayed during the week and given into a small glass of wine, or a mini chocolate bar or three lol, but that's not a bad thing, as long as they count it as syns correctly they will still loose a pound or two, or maybe just maintain last weeks weight. I would advise anyone to give Slimming World a try for at least a month, you never know they may even loose some weight. It is not so much a diet as a healthy eating program that chsnges the way you cook and eat the things you love. gentle (((((HUGS))))) Kim PS. No I am not a slimming world consultant lol xx

i do not eat cakes biscuits puddings, snacks and v little fried food-only that that has to be fried to cook.(financial reasons so stopped buying things like taht 4 years ago)i stopped eating burgers after the horsemeat scandal and fro the last 2 years have been eating more healthily.i rarely eat bread except for the odd slice of toast(wholemeal) and I stopped having wheat cereals fro a week sometime ago and it made no difference.the My DR recorded me as being obese when he measured my BMI andi objected to that because I am only a size12-14 and no way fat pointing out to him that the weight gain was all abdominal and nto thru my diet and until they do something about it,i wont lose weight.i did lose weight a couple of months ago but that was sudden weight loss onm y arms legs and bum.like Coz1 says I only have breakfast,a small meal at lunchtime -normally finished off by my dogs cos I cant eat it all and that's all. my stomach like Coz's is solid and hard and very lumpy ,i do ahve abit of fat and htis is soft.like Coz i said to myrheumy "how can i diet wheni dont eat anythign?"do have a bit of chocolate daily as an energy boost.drs have dismissed my symtpoms over the last 2 years -he once said to me -when I said can something be done about my stomach -his comment wa s plastic surgery??and when I ahd bruising round my eyes eh said wear "make up".ignored a cough ive had for a year

KimLH profile image
KimLH in reply toanbuma

I also only used to have a small breakfast, a light lunch and smallish evening meal, I have since been educated in the fact that although they were small portion's they were made up of the wrong food, I hardly ever had bread but did at pastry (wheat content in that) maybe look at the slimming world website and follow the diet for a week or two before you dismiss this a rubbish, I was only trying to help, you seem so negative that the problems are diet related and your positivity that it relates to health which your Dr seems to dismiss is quite worrying, maybe if you tried various eating plans for a week or two each, keep a food diary so that you can show your Dr what you have been doing and any bad/good results from that plan he may have a little more to work on and agree to do some tests and hopefully help you to reach a solution that you are happy with. xxx

That sucks anbuma. I've had a cough with phlegm for about 10 years now. The only thing they ever do is a chest x-ray which always comes back clear. Yet I get repeated infections and still I cough, especially when I laugh!

Do you have asthma? Just curious as one gp tried to blame it on my asthma. They kinda ignore it now since I'm clearly not dead, so it's isn't serious, lol.

The stomach thing truly sucks. I fully sympathise. Mine seems to have stopped growing for now, oddly with the upping of food intake (guess I really wasn't eating enough). With so many allergies and food issues in my family I'm very careful about what I eat, and drink so much water now. Actually that's a very odd thing. I find I need to drink way more than I used to. Just wondered if that might be something to consider as a possible sign of a problem?

Glenys profile image
Glenys in reply toladytelita

Hi Ladytelita. I had a chronic cough at night for many years, which kept me awake, and docs all thought it was asthma until I found an article on GERD. Stomach acid was spilling up into my oesophagus (because of the muscle relaxant effect of the Amitriptyline I was taking) and irritating the throat and around the chest area. A couple of weeks of Lansoprazole, and I was much better.

Hubby had a cough with phlem everytime he had anything to eat, and was always "clogged up" after icecream. He is now on Omeprazole, as he started to get indigestion bad in the evenings. The cough, and bad breath goes when he takes it regularly, but on the times when he has tried to drop the dose I can always tell because the cough comes back, and urge him to take them again (that men for you...).

Also, My chiropractor told me that if the body doesn't get enough to drink on a regular basis it actually stops "asking" for fluid by suppressing the thirst reflex, after all what's the point of asking for liquid if it is going to be ignored. He followed on to say that once you start drinking regular again your body starts letting you know when it is thirsty again! Magic! I wonder if that helps?

XHuggles G

ladytelita profile image
ladytelita in reply toGlenys

Hey Glenys, that was a suprisingly accurate answer! I was on Omeprazole for a couple of weeks for acid problems and it made a big difference. I haven't had it since and the acid came back of course.

I never used to drink very much so being thirsty all the time now also makes sense but it does seem a little over the top, like it's making up for lost time.

I put on weight massively before I was diagnosed. It was one of the things that drove me to the gp in the first place (along with all the aching etc). If I had been over-eating, fine, but I really wasn't. I was seriously dieting, eating less and less til it was making me ill itself. I was highly active (ten mile walks several times a week, high level rider training for 4 hours one day a week and swimming). Despite all I did it was still going on. Didn't make sense, then the gp told me to eat less and exercise and I almost exploded all over her. Thankfully my mother was present and I contained myself although I used some strong language before leaving. She turned out to be so totally wrong when they found the infection within the week. I know I've said about her before, but it bears repeating, gp's make mistakes.

Naturally I now eat a little more sensibly and more than I did then but of course the weight isn't going away at all. It's all on my belly, which is wierd for my age, and I don't like it! I just know any pills are going to make it worse too. Why can't they come up with pain killers that make you lose weight! How popular would they be. :D

thanks for the reply's mine is all around my stomach too, I am on the change too, I have just come off the above tablets about two months ago still have not lost weight. Why do doctors always say "well your weight don't help",I know someone who as just been told she as fibro and she only a size 10.I would put my hands up if I sat all-day stuffing my face but I don't. My husband does the shopping because I cant because of this horrible illness and he don't buy junk, so there is lots of fruit and veg in our house, I must eat at lease 8 portions of fruit and veg a day. If anyone as any tips please let me know. I get so depress over this going to Evans to buy my clothes are not good, I think its why I don't go out much as well I am seeing a head doctor at moment. Anyway I have taken up enough of your time thanks for reading this.xx

Hi,

I have put a lot of weight on (again for me it's mostly around the tummy area) and I thought I was eating fairly well. However, I've been doing weight watchers (online - I can't go to meetings - not my thing) and while I've continued to eat the same food, I have realised that in order to maintain or lose weight I have to reduce my portions big time. It's amazing how many points a big bowl of cornflakes is, and I thought that wasn't too bad to eat.

As I can't do any exercise, weight loss has to be by food reduction alone. I have learned a lot about how just a few naughty/extra things mean I either don't lose or I actually put on weight. I've been doing this since May and I aim to either hit or be just below my daily point limit every day. If you don't eat enough, this doesn't mean you lose more (as I found out). So, since may I have lost 27 1/2 pounds (1/2lb off 2 stone :) ). It's coming off slowly, which is the best way to do it for your body.

I do feel so much better, eg. I can bend to put my socks on easier. I'm making myself eat more fruit and veg (0 points) to fill me up and, given my current daily limit is 31 points, find it much easier to refuse the slice of choc cake which is 13 points. It's made me much more aware of what to eat and how much to eat.

Sorry I'm repeating myself now. I'm not saying it's easy, or that this would work for everyone, but it is working for me so far :) It's not a miracle cure for fibromyalgia (as so many people say... arghh..!), but it means I don't exacerbate other issues, eg. osteoarthritis in my hips.

Again, this is simply to say what I'm doing to lose weight. It's hard, but it's working :)

what if its not due to diet?

KimLH profile image
KimLH

Hi Pip I also ballooned after I was diagnosed, the fact that I was less mobile and I gave up smoking I also have an under active thyroid (may be worth asking for a check if you not had one) I just got bigger and bigger, I tried all sorts of diets, some left me starving others were bland etc etc.. so I gave up and accepted that I was going to fat for the rest of my life, then the worst happened my brother 7 years my senior passed away, he had a heart attack, he ate healthy food, didnt drink or smoke and walked etc.. regularly.

I must say this was a HUGE kick up the bum for me, I wanted to be around to watch my g/kids group and have kids of their own, my daughter-in-law had just given me my 8th g/child (a girl) and was attending slimming world to shift her baby bump, as she had done 2 years earlier after giving me a g/son, she suggested I went along with her, so I did this was probably one of the only diets I had not tried over the years, after nine weeks of attended the group I have lost 2 stone...YES 2 STONE I am over the moon, The best thing about slimming world is that you can eat what you want, in fact I eat more than I did before, this diet educates you on healthy eating, I still have my pudding after dinner but they are healthy ones with just a little naughtiness in them.

I would recommend Slimming world to anyone that needs to loose weight without a punishing exercise plan. I have been to 2 different meeting (one was on my holidays so went as a visitor because I didnt want to miss weigh-in so early in my weight loss program, I won slimmer of the week and was given my prize of a bag of fruit & veg and a couple of little treats, I tried to refuse it as I felt it should go to a group member there, only to be met with cry's of "you are a member of slimming, it does not matter where you go to be weighed etc... we are all part of the same Support network" and that sum's it up for me.

Look up o the internet or purchase the slimming world magazine available in most shop/supermarkets, you ail find a week's eating plan in there give it a go for a week, you will be surprised at the results, I hope you and any other's that read this find it of some use xx gentle (((((HUGS))))) Kim

Anbuma, you have raised this question previously, you have spoken with your doctor about this and if my memory serves me right, he has assured you that it is not linked ovarian cancer or any other such thing? I'm afraid I am puzzled why you keep coming and asking for advice and people respond, but you still are convinced that there is something majorly wrong. I pray to God that this is not the situation, but if you keep getting different advice time and time again, because what has affected other people isn't necessarily what is the answer for you.

Yet again I find myself saying to try to take on board all the answers the medics have given you instead of trying to convince yourself that the worse case scenario is what you have, though if you are not going to take the doctor's advice, then maybe asking him about it would be futile as you dismiss his advice.

sorry foggy I disagree with some of your comments.i dont think i am dismissing his advice. he has on some occasions dismissed what I have told him of hasn't told me what bloods he is testing for.it wa s18months after I first went to him with stomach probs andhe said things like "do oyu want palastic surgery??" or "icant feel anything" "wear make up".none of these exactly give reassurance that nothing was wrong.

,now I have had op and htye ddint find anything else ,just wanted answers that the docs never gave and the others here havethe same experiences as me.

I take that on board anbuma, maybe you really do then need to change to a doctor who has a much better understanding of your condition. It does sound a bit like he's not taking you seriously. Asking questions like do you want plastic surgery and the other would make me cross and i wouldn't want to be his patient any more ! I didn't mean to come across as harsh, but on re-reading, I apologise if I did. I hope you can get a doctor to help very soon

Hi, I have put on so much weight I had to change the size of my wheelchair and went up two sizes. I was already too heavy but doing s something about it. I was getting to the third floor fast without being out of breath when my knees complained followed by bursitis. However this did lead to my diagnosis. One positive. But I am on Amitriptyline and Lyrica (Gabapalin) and I think both are connected to weight gain. Personally I think I put on weight because I was mourning the loss of freedom to go where I wanted, when I wanted. I'd got myself a dog to get fit with but couldn't walk her for months. I got a mobility scooter and she learned to run alongside. Depression is a big cause for over eating. I've done all the diets and could do it again, but you have to really be ready to change your life style. No biscuits with tea, crisps with a drink, no chocolate biscuit either. An apple has calories, raisins are the worst, grapes too, all high in sugar.

The diet that surprised me (which I can't recall but not WW) said don't mix carbohydrates with protein. I lost a fair bit on that one but ought to look it up.

If you think you have a medical reason, ask for a second opinion.

Good luck.

My stomach is huge!! I can't remember when I first became really aware of it, but it's so noticeable and awkward. I would probably be a size 18 if I didn't have it, but I'm having to buy size 30 clothes just to cover my tum!! I eat a low carb diet; no starchy carbs, bread, pasta, rice or potatoes, only 2 pieces of fruit a day, plenty of protein and veg, yet I still can't lose the weight. I'm also unable to exercise so my portion sizes have to be quite small. I drink plenty of fluid - no alcohol, but it won't shift. I mentioned it to my GP but she said nothing can be done until my BMI is within acceptable levels!! Fat chance. My diabetologist did say that injecting into the stomach can cause a hardening of the area and also my diabetes medication will make me gain weight. He never comments on my weight or tells me I need to lose some!! I just feel like a beached whale most of the time!! XXXXXX
