Does anyone have shakey breathing like involuntary rasps of breath like you get when you have been sobbing.

When I am just watching tv or just sitting down at any time my breath catches .To the point that lately when I am eating I choke because I inhale with a mouth full of food. :-( I also wake my self up with the strength of it!! It is horrid.

I don't like the sound of that, Rainbow - I think you should call your doctor as soon as possible. Breathing problems should always be taken seriously!

I have seen the Dr and he just thinks I get breathless through stress. He says its all Fibro related! So that was why I asked the question x The funny thing is it never happens when I see him,so he doesn't know what its like x

I'm glad you've seen the doc, and that he's ruled out anything serious. It sounds as though you are hyperventilating, which is not uncommon in people with chronic pain syndromes.

The only way to help this is to practice relaxation exercises (like the ones they teach you during pregnancy!) and to do deep, controlled breathing - in to the count of 10 - out to the count of 10.

If you practice this for a few weeks, you should see an improvement. The only downside is that you might die of boredom - but at least it's not serious! :D

I have the same problem, it almost feels as if I have forgotten to breathe for a while then have to gasp for breath, after a bit of heavy breathing it settles down. It is scary. I have depression and agoraphobia too so it is probably anxiety related.

this is how i get, all of a sudden its like I can't breath. I have never really known how to explain it. It doesn't necessarily happen when stressed either, or eating. It just happens. I think my breathing is very shallow anyway, and as I have a hiatus hernia it catches me there and then causes me more pain! Ive never thought of it being anything serious as Ive had it for years, it just happens without warning and goes once i have managed a few deeper breaths. xx

Hi Rainbowdancer.

Does your area have a Wellbeing service? Your GP can let you know and refer you, or you can self-refer, for a variety of courses which will help you relax a bit. It's worth a try. We sometimes don't realise how much stress we're really in.

Moffy's deep breathing is a good one.

I have that quite a lot, and it can happen whilst im eating my food, have had an xray where you swallow stuff and they xray it whilst its going down, and they tell me I have a muscle in the throat that is going into spasm evry now and then which is caused by the fibro, i was told to not panic it wont stop me breathing all together and WILL calm down, and to take some sips of a fizzy drink, apparently the fizzy drink calms the muscle because it may make you burp..dont know if that peice of news is any help to any of you, do hope so, gentle hugs Dee x :}
