PCOS and IVF

asking on behalf of a friend.

My friend is currently undergoing IVF and has PCOS, she is due her egg collection Friday and is already in a lot of discomfort. She's been told at her scan today today her ovaries are very "busy" and to expect the pain to increase before Friday, she's not going to be having a fresh transfer due to being high risk of OHSS. Has anyone whose been in a similar situation got any advice for the pain and anything she could do to help with minimising the OHSS risk please?Xx

I’ve had OHSS twice and it wasn’t fun.. i’ve never had pain like it, so I really empathise with your friend.

Drinking lots of water can help and also eating a high protein diet. The clinic will more than likely give her medication after egg collection to dampen down her ovaries.

Paracetamol is ok at this stage and she could maybe try things like a hot water bottle and peppermint tea.

Hi! PCOS here too and was very uncomfortable in the run up to egg collection due to the 32 follicles growing...I developed OHSS a few days after egg collection and it was quite painful. The advice I got from my clinic was to be on a protein rich diet and have a few protein shakes or protein yoghurts a day. Apparently the protein helps absorb the excess of liquid that is building up. They also recommended sport drinks with electrolytes. Very best of luck to your friend. As far as we were told the serious cases of OHSS develop mainly if you proceed with pregnancy in that same cycle as the daily doubling HCG feeds it. The OHSS resolved itself in a few days when my period came. Paracetamol didn't ease my pain but a hot water bottle helped.

Hi Elo . I had same situation. Very bad ohss been hospitalised. I have 62 egg ended with 16mature eggs . Very discomfort process. I'm wondering after freezing transfer in womb is ohss came again. This is my biggest fear for pregnancy

Hi! I am so sorry you had such a bad OHSS and had to get hospitalised! My consultant said that the first period after IVF resets the ovaries and there is no risk of OHSS if you do an FET after that period. The risk is if you proceed with transfer and implantation in the same cycle. For what it's worth, I've had two FETs after the OHSS with no sign of it. Very best of luck!

Thanks reply me back . I have frozen embroyes not suggested for fresh transfer. Period is not coming in ful flow. I dont know the harmones is not properly released thus why. They give cambogoline not working to much . Nurse said they try with another drugs .so they say I hope period come in full flow. I'm thinking after the pregnancy in the future may be breast cancer chances increase due to high harmones . Is the correct. ?
