Eligible for NHS IVF: Hi all, just a... - Fertility Network UK
Eligible for NHS IVF
Hi Sabnon i didn't think this would be an issue if she is married to a British person. I have an Irish passport but my husband is British. We had to show ID on both our rounds of ivf but could be any kind of recognised ID (eg. Driving licence). Perhaps if she is from outside EU it's different? I just thought you'd have to be a permanent resident in the UK
Yea she is from outside EU. They were refered to hospital and the doc said that she have to have permanent passport to eligible for free IVF , which she is applying after 2 years . So basically doctor said that wait for 2 years for free IVF or either go privately 😞
I think on the forms we completed it might have said you have to be a permanent resident in the UK for at least 3 yrs. I've been here 20 yrs and been married for 6 yrs do it didn't really come up. I don't know much about it but it's usually the way unfortunately xx
Perhaps it depends which region in the UK they are trying to get treatment. I’m in Scotland. My husband has a British passport and I have a EU passport. We were referred to the clinic and were referred to start IVF within a year of establishing residency here. (We started investigations in another country and had the paperwork to prove we had been trying before arriving in the Uk and they accepted that) Our passports didn’t seem to be an issue. I think we showed our passports once at the beginning. We might have had to show a bill or something to prove residency.
Your friend would need to fulfil the criteria for any NHS non-emergency specialist treatment which means being considered “ordinarily resident” in the UK if she is from outside the EEA.
Probably an issue with residency status rather than nationality. And that can be checked through tax or national insurance records.
If that’s what the dr said then it’s probably right. She should also be aware the rules can change for better or worse at any time.
I would personally challenge the doctor on it and ask where that stipulation is written... and/or ask someone else. Maybe the NHS directly or the Local council. Doctors are only human and can make mistakes or misspeak as well. It could just be a clinic/hospital policy in which case you could try looking elsewhere if that’s an option.
