UCLH fertility treatments

Hi everyone.

I’m keen to hear from anyone that’s had experience at UCLH for IVF/ICSI treatment.

It’s been a long journey so far. Tried to conceive for 2 years, then had tests and been in the waitlist for nearly a year, so it’s been over 3 years now! Finally getting somewhere…

I’m female 38 years old. I’ve had an initial and follow up consultation, which was yesterday, with my husband who needed to have mTESE surgical sperm removal following a non obstructive azoospermia diagnosis. He had the surgery last week. Miraculously, a very small quantity of sperm was found and frozen. Though very little, we were told there was motile sperm that can be used to attempt IVF via ICSI. The next step is to start IVF and try to thaw the sperm and select the best sperm to fertilise my fresh eggs to make embryos, then implant etc. they have asked us to consider if we want to have donor sperm as a backup. I know my husband so far would not want this as he feels he wouldn’t have a connection with the child. He would t be its father. Does anyone have advise on what to consider here or how to go about that conversation?

Next immediate steps:

I first would need to have a 3DSIS scan. I was told the waitlist for this scan is around 2 months. Is it painful?

Next is the dummy embryo transfer. Is that painful?

I should add that my test so far are all normal. I am fortunate that I don’t have any apparent fertility complications. I am anxious that that may not be the case when they do these first 2 tests or that by doing them the disrupt my womb and cause complications.

I’d love to hear from anyone who wants to respond to my questions or has comments or questions! Thanks so much

The scan is a 3D Saline Infusion Scan - fluid is used to expand & hold the womb walls apart - this means they can see in greater detail during the scan Can cause some cramps but most patients do not experience much discomfort But might be an idea to take some paracetamol before hand . Mock transfers can cause some mild discomfort/cramps similar to getting your smear taken For support re donor using donor take a look at Donor Conception Network dcnetwork.org
