Has anyone ever had zero eggs fertilising?

Hello, this was our first treatment.

I was originally told I had a high ovarian reserve however in mid and final scans this didn’t seem to correlate.

First scan I appeared to have had 20 follicles (ranging in sizes, one ovary with only 4,) and 11 between 15 and 22mm. I was told I had a very low level of oestrogen of 2000 (but that this could be a lab mistake) as it would be expected around 12000.

Egg retrieval took only 5 eggs, one being immature, I was called this morning to say that not a single egg had fertilised. The lady informed me that the eggs looked normal, sperm appeared normal but that sometimes they ‘don’t take together’ and that it is very unusual for no fertilisation to take place.

Is there anyone that has been in a similar position?

Hope you get some replies to your post as this forum is an excellent source of support Might be an idea to speak to your clinic /embryologist for a fuller explanation so you have the full picture and an idea of your next step

hi Dear,

1 st of all I am so sorry you have to go through this. This happened to me once with 9 mature eggs and great sperm count but none of the eggs fertilize. 2 did but only after 2 days and were abnormal fertilized ofcourse

Same story told to me that eggs and sperms did not quite take off.

We did ICSI next time and out of 8 mature eggs 6 fertilized. one fresh and 3 could be frozen as blastocyst.

Although those embryos did not implant but ICSI gave us much better results.

Could be an option to try next time

Good luck and a hug ❣️

Oh I’m glad that the future than still be positive! We did go through ICSI this time.

The doctor has since rang us and said he was very shocked by the outcome. Going to change medication the next time and start with a higher dose which may help, hopefully! X

Helloo yes this has happened to me too.

First round I got 13 eggs and none fertilised.

Second round, completely different medication we got 6 eggs and 2 fertilised. I was gutted because I was focusing on the numbers but our consultant said lower numbers but better quality was a good outcome. We also used ICSI the second time xx

Hopefully medication can help… definitely needing better quality with eggs. Onwards and upwards, giving myself a couple of months break before starting again xxx

yes this happened to me a couple of months ago. We did ICSI. 5 eggs collected one mature and didn’t fertilise. I was so upset by the outcome I have taken a month off before I go again which is meant to be this month and I’m debating whether I’m ready. This time around they have suggested changing my meds dose. So we will see. My clinic said it was probably egg quality. Funny that as I had been working on my egg quality for months so it’s very heartbreaking. So we will see on the next round.

So sorry to hear, it seems we are in a similar situation. They did say it could be my egg quality too. Disheartening there isn’t a way of being able to assess that beforehand. But by trying different medication we can only see… lots is positive stories too about changing medication impacting on fertilisation rates!

I have ordered ‘it starts at the egg’ by Rebecca Fett, I want to make sure this time I can do everything possible prior to going again. I can understand not feeling ready… it’s a big step, listen to your body… my doctor advised maybe starting after Christmas.

Here if you need anything at all x

Thank you! 😊

I have read that book at least twice. I got some great tips but none that made a difference unfortunately. Maybe the next cycle will be different.

hello! We had total fertilisation failure with icsi 😱 a few years ago. It was soul destroying but all other cycles were ok. Change meds and maybe next time will be better. (IVF is so trial and error)
