Tests results: MTHFR mutation

Hey, hope everyone is doing well. So just as a bit of background I'm prepping for my third and final IVF cycle next month. After my second cycle failed my consultant recommended a heap of tests to just "cross the ts" and it's taken ages for all the genetic tests to come back.

In that time the tests from my GP (including TSH, prothrombin, etc) have all come back boringly normal. I was expecting the genetic tests to all be normal too, but I've just found out I am MTHFR C677T homozygous, which means my body may have trouble metabolising folic acid properly.

The consultant has said that this probably isn't the 'reason' why my previous cycles have failed and that as I've been supplementing with folic acid for 2 years my folate levels should be normal. None-the-less he's suggested I get my levels checked by the GP.

For 3 months I've been taking a "MTHFR-Friendly Methylfolate" (lucky!) and I've been cleared to continue treatment as usual next month, but now I'm having some niggling doubts and wondering if I should make sure my folate is okay before I go ahead? Has anyone else experienced this? What did you do? Am I overthinking it (as usual)?

Hope you get some replies to your post Think 3 months should be enough time for your folate levels to have increased Might be an idea to get it checked out by your GP/clinic

Take care

The fact you are taking Methylfolate instead of Folic Acid is good (to my understanding anyway). Getting levels checked sounds like a good idea for your own peace of mind more than anything else, focus on the next step each bit at a time to prevent getting overwhelmed. I.e. book in the test with GP and once you have the result you will be in a better more informed position to go back to your clinic and discuss any implications. I'm sure it will be fine though, I know some of the variants are quite common but not sure exactly which ones x x

That's true, I spoke to a friend who's also had IVF and she knows of a few people who have the same variant, so I'm guessing it's fairly common. A few hours on and I'm pretty confident the methylfolate I'm taking will be enough, but luckily I've managed to book a blood test for next thursday just to be sure :)

I had the same test and result as you and take a conception vitamin Folic Acid as L-Methylfolate. I haven’t had my levels checked when we’ve had treatment. Have you asked the consultant if they think it’s worthwhile checking? I think you would be okay as you should also get some from your diet too? 😊

He did recommend it yes and so I've just gone ahead and booked a blood test, though I'm hopeful it'll all be fine as I've been taking L-methylfolate like you :)

Oh I would book it too if my consultant had recommended it. You have made me think about mine and whether i should do the same and test. Fingers crossed your levels are fine, I’m sure they will be 😊
