Sensitive - How long does it take to get a negative pregnancy test after miscarriage?

Hi all,

I took medication for a miscarriage on Dec 23rd (due to a empty 3cm sac). I was told the hcg pregnancy test should be negative 3 weeks after, which will be Saturday. I took the HCG test this morning and the test line is still almost as dark as the control.

I was expecting the test to be negative or a lot lighter as I passed what looked like a 3cm intact sac on Dec 25th.

I will call EPU after Saturday, but was just wondering in the meantime how long it look to get a negative test after this sort of thing? I am still bleeding lightly.

Best wishes to all for getting babies this year x

Hey hun, sending lots of love and hugs your way 😘😘😘 I had positive tests for a good few weeks until I stopped bleeding. Your post brought it back to me as I remember ringing the clinic and asking them why they were still positive. Thinking of you 🩷

Definitely call the EPU especially if still bleeding. They tend to be more concerned about retained products if you are both still testing positive and bleeding as opposed to just testing positive. That's what happened to me. Sending hugs and I'm hoping this is not the case but definitely get it checked ❤️

Agree with this - need to keep an eye on it as retained products can cause complications and become infected. I was told after my D&C that it could take quite a while for the HCG to drop but my HCG dropped from over 3,000 to 300 in just 2 days, and was at 8 after 10 days, which I guess would be negative on most pregnancy tests, and I didn't have any bleeding at all, so it was over quite quickly. It may take longer if you've taken meds as opposed to having surgery, but my hospital asked me to come back and have HCG repeated until it dropped to almost nothing so maybe get in touch with the EPU or your GP and ask them to check the HCG?

Thank you for the advice. I wasn't even thinking of infections so good to know. Sorry you went through this x

Hopefully it's nothing like that and it's more just your body taking time to settle (you've been through enough) but just worth bearing in mind as it happened to me after a c-section and I wasn't really aware until 6-8 weeks later that something wasn't right x

Thank you. Good to know the significance of having both a positive and bleeding together x

mine was down within a two weeks so definitely seek advice as could indicate ectopic or retained products. Be on the safe side. I know everyone is different though x

mine took ages I choose to do a natural one, 5/6 weeks maybe longer it seemed it. as I had the smallest amount of retain , which eventually left, sending hugs as it's an awful time and you just want your body to be back xxx

Wow that's a long time. I was lining up donor eggs but if this drags out I might have to delay x

Hi Orangeflowers

So sorry this is dragging on. It’s such a horrible thing to go through and once you’ve accepted it’s happening, you want the nightmare to end.

My situation was different as I was 12 weeks at the time, I was managed medically in hospital for three days. As the placenta came out in bits, my consultant made me sit it out for two weeks at home and I was rescanned at the EPU. All in all in took 3-4 weeks before I was testing negative on the home pregnancy test.

Sending you a big hug as I know (like many other ladies on here) the absolute heartbreak and despair you’re feeling.

Take care
