Desperate for advice! 6 weeks pregnant brown discharge, cramps and back ache..IVF and progesterone

I’m hoping someone has some advice on this 🤞🏻

currently 6 weeks pregnant from IVF. Been having symptoms of nausea fatigue sore boobs itchy skin and constant cramps that keep moving around.

I currently take progesterone 400 x 3 times a day, been taking since before transfer.

yesterday when inserting the pessaries with the applicator stick I saw slight brown discharge in the mucus on the stick, not a lot but enough to worry me. I called the clinic and they did not seem worried and advised to insert with fingers instead as it may just be irritation from the stick, however brown means old so not a concern.

There is no discharge in between when I wipe or on my liner, it’s only on the applicator

it’s the exact same today however have a lot of cramps and some mild low back ache. Everything I read with the discharge and back combined points to miscarriage! Scan isn’t until 24th November…I’m terrified!!

Hi lovely, I'm so sorry to hear that you're feeling so worried. Very natural to feel this way. You can have a scan sooner with the early pregnancy unit. I did that twice as I had bright red blood. As long as it stays brown it shouldn't be anything to worry about and some women bleed throughout pregnancy and have healthy babies. It's happened to a couple of friends of mine. Good luck. Xx

Thank you for the reply! Will the epu see me this early? I’ve read mixed things on them x

I got seen at 5 and a half weeks and at 6 weeks with different pregnancies. Didn't end well for me but I hope your situation is different. Just tell them how anxious you are and that it's an ivf pregnancy. Hopefully they'll help. Xx

Also you can ask your fertility clinic to do a scan - if it's a miscarriage they won't be able to treat it but can let you know what's going on or private scans are about £50 I think.

Hiya, I’m sorry you’re feeling so nervous. With my successful pregnancy I had a significant amount of brown/pink/red spotting from 5 weeks until 8/9 weeks. I was also on progesterone. They never found the cause for the bleeding but my baby is here a healthy 10m old. I am also currently 4/5 weeks pregnant and spotting again, some back ache, cramping and trying to remain positive. I’m right there with you, I remind myself it’s always more likely a pregnancy will end with a baby than a miscarriage xxx

I wouldn’t worry. I had this with my twins and they are nearly 2 yrs old now. Good luck with your pregnancy.

Hi,I had this for a few weeks. Mine was probably due to a subchorionic haematoma that they found on a scan, which can happen when you take Aspirin. I just came off the Aspirin and upped my progesterone and was better by week 12.

I went to ultrasound direct for a scan at 6 weeks as I was worried and wanted to know. After that I went to day assessment at my local hospital maternity unit and they said not to worry unless I fill a panty liner with blood. My clinic increased my progesterone.

I now have a 5 week old baby girl, so try not to worry too much. I know that is easier said than done.

Good luck.

X

your clinic is right it’s old blood and normal when on progesterone but since you are also having cramps now I would call them back and ask if they can move your scan earlier. If not you can get a private scan at 6 weeks or try your EPU. It really doesn’t always mean misscariage but I know you will be worried so you do have those options to help you understand what’s going on xxx

hi Amanda, I’m so sorry this is so stressful for you 💔. Everything I read said if bleeding but no cramps then you’re ok. Well I had the worst period cramps, both front and back, and sorting that got heavier and went on to be a heavy bleed and still all was fine (28 week currently). So hard, cause I know what I was like at that time but I wish I could go back now and not google as much. All it did was add extra anxiety. I cramped till around 12 week and bled till around 16. It’s so much more common than we all realise, especially in ivf. But I would probably pay for an early scan at a private clinic if your anxiety gets worse. Good luck and I have everything crossed for you ❤️🙏🏼.

thank you all for your reassurance! No spotting this morning and cramps are less (cramps I’ve had since the start but yesterday they just felt different 😢 weve booked a private scan for this week… fingers crossed 🤞🏻 everything is ok ❤️

I agree with everyone else, brown blood and so little should be ok. I had two huge bleed at 5 weeks and spotting for a lot if the guy trimester. My twins are 18 months now. It was the progesterone. The pessaries make your cervix really vascular (full of blood) and can irritate. Can you use them in the back? I changed to cyclogest for this reason and my spotting cleared up.

Wishing you all the best for you can! Let us know how you get on.

Xxxx

I had brown spotting at 6 weeks. Enough to show on a liner. I used cyclogest so could do rectally and it helped a bit. By 7 weeks it had stopped and when I had the scan it showed a heamatoma. Nothing to worry about though, I'm now 18 weeks and heamatoma gone (did have bleeding a couple more times on and off).

oh wow! Congratulations on your pregnancy 🥰 the spotting appears to have stopped for now. Still lots of cramps but I’ve had them for few weeks and believe maybe from the progesterone. It’s really hard with the progesterone to know for sure as if have miscarried it would delay the bleeding from my understanding. It’s all a long difficult waiting game 😢 x

Hi Amanda,

I hope you don’t mind me asking how you are doing?

Same thing is happening to me, brown discharge in the mucus on the applicator stick. Not a lot but enough to see.
