After lots of ups and downs over several years we finally got our first ever BFP last week! Our clinic doesn’t scan until 8 weeks but we’re considering getting a private scan earlier (6-7 weeks) if we can as I’m feeling very anxious.
Just wondered if anyone had a 6 week scan and whether they found it calmed the worrying at all?
Thank you for your help!

Congrats on the bfp. I personally wouldn’t have a private scan if you can hold off. I had a scan at 6 weeks exactly for bleeding. The scan was basically just to check that the pregnancy was where it should be and vaguely had a yolk sac, fetal pole and heart beat. Be warned you can’t see much at all.
They are also looking at tiny measurements which even if slightly off are incredibly anxiety provoking! (For context, baby was about 3mm at the 6w scan). Google is not your friend and Ivf pregnancies measure slightly differently anyways.
Also private scans might not have equipment that is sensitive enough for measuring at 6 weeks but will happily take your cash. My clinic couldn’t scan me before 8 weeks when I was bleeding because their equipment isn’t sensitive enough and I had to go to epu. I’ve seen a lot of posts of people super worried that their baby couldn’t be seen and a week later when scanned, all was well.
Someone said to me that the scans help anxiety for about a day or so and I too found that with scans too. They didn’t hold it off for long.
By 8 weeks, we could see a proper little human shaped blob with a heart beat and tiny arm blobs and it’s much clearer that things are going in the right direction.
I agree with this too if no bleeding etc or cause for concern there isn’t much can be seen on a scan before 8 weeks so it may or may not reassure you as sometimes can cause more stress if they dont see a heartbeat as too early. We had early scans for to bleeding at 5.5 and 6.5 but personally there was no ‘relief’ until the 8 week scan. I defo found private scans in between the nhs ones at 10weeks, 16 weeks etc really helpful for reassurance though so you gotta do what’s right for you but just a wee heads up that the early ones don’t always ‘help’ congratulations and wishing you a healthy pregnancy Pepperino
congratulations! I had a scan at 6+1 with my twins due to history of ectopics and also to prepare myself for the worst of needs be - I saw both babies and heartbeats and was reassured that they were measuring what they should be so it was good to help ease my anxiety a little x
Congratulations on your BFP! Just like testing early I think it is not advisable to scan early. Very little can be seen on a 6 week scan. Best you wait for the 8 weeks.
Thank you so much everyone, your replies have really helped. And thank you for the congratulations, I still can’t really believe it!
I think it will be best to wait until the 8 week scan however difficult unless anything dramatic happens. Had a bit of brown spotting yesterday that has stopped now , but other than that there’s no real medical reason to have an early scan at the moment.
Congratulations on your pregnancy! I agree with the other ladies on here…if no problems I would hold off having a scan at 6 weeks. They can’t always see the sac and if they don’t this may cause more panic and anxiety. Xx
