6 week scan - what happens?

Hey Guys,

Has anyone had a 6 week scan and can share what happens?

Is the scan on the surface or inside?

Then a bit confused what happens after that if the scan shows a viable pregnancy.....do we just wait for 12 week or 20 week?

Any insights would be amazing.

Goes in your moo moo I'm afraid lol. Then normally you wait for your 12 week scan, which will be on your belly. I paid for a private scan at 9 weeks and that was on the belly too 😘 xx

Oh shucks....I was afraid of that! 😅

So nhs does 12 week and 20 week is that how it works?

Not getting ahead of myself until we are much further along...

But completely clueless...

You should be used to things being prodded up your moo moo by now lol. Yeh they do hun. I'm completely useless too lol xxx

Haha yes I know! I think we counted the procedures and scans since I started the process.

Normally people wouldn't be used to this I suppose.

IVF you loose all shame 🤣

Did you feel fatigue at this stage? I know you said you haven't had many symptoms....

As Michelle says it will be internal. NHS scans are booking/screening test at 12 weeks and then anomaly scan at 20 weeks and they are normally on the tummy.

I’m having an extra scan at 11 weeks as part of Harmony testing privately- it’s additional blood testing and scan for chromosome abnormalities.

I have spent the last few weeks just counting down to each scan! It’s something to look forward to so plan away!!! I self referred for midwife antenatal care once I had my viability scan - every area is different how you do this, some need a GP referral.

Thanks for the info! It is a bit confusing as we are slightly different to other people who concieve I think. Even though ours is a natural pregnancy we had IVF so are still high risk....

When is it safe to tell people? After the 12 week?

Nobody knows we had IVF or were trying...

When I went for my booking midwife appointment , the only risk factor she counted was me being over 35 so I think unless you have had recurrent failures or miscarriages, I would not think of myself as high risk.

Telling people is super personal- a few people know about our ivf but I kept dates vague. I told my trainer and acupuncturist but no one else yet-my Mum can’t keep a secret so we are waiting until our 12 week scan.

Btw- echo the zombie thing. I get ready for bed at 9pm and I think about bed all day!! I can’t wait to feel normal again!! Xx

in reply to

Awww best of luck with it all.

Agree about the high risk - we have no underlying conditions so it is purely based on age (I am 38 in July). Suppose everyone is at risk pre - 12 weeks...

My parents are such blabber-mouths so if I told them they would just tell everyone else in my family but tell them not to tell which would cause me stress.

I want to spare them any stress too by telling them early....

We are going away on holiday so a shame I cannot tell them before then - my dad loves pouring me wine, typical Irish dad. 😂

12 weeks it will be then...

More waiting (and sleeping) 😅

Hope it all progresses nicely for you!

Hey, as soon as you get positive news at your 6 week viability scan, I would call your GP surgery to ask what the process is to see the midwife. The midwives need to do your 1st appointment (called a ‘booking’) by 10 weeks and can get busy so you can get that booked soon. At that 1st apt they will arrange your 12 week scan and tell you everything else you need to know about the midwife care. I have my 1st apt today!! 😃 (8w6d). Enjoy and best of luck at your first scan xx

Awww best of luck for you :)

Hey. My clinic scanned at 6 weeks then again at 8 weeks before I was handed over to primary care. Both were internal but amazing the change in 2 weeks was overwhelming.

I called the community midwife myself and had my booking appointment this week that's a long appointment be prepared for up to 2hrs with Blood tests etc. We didn't listen to the heart beat but I think it's to early for that so now waiting for 12 weeks scan 😍😍

Just on the "when to share the news" subject we decided to tell after the 8 weeks scan close family and friends who had already shared our journey as I believe that if anything happens they'd be who I'd need support from but I suppose that's something you decide yourself it's different for everyone. I had to tell work as my job is quite physical and I'm pooped all the time!!!

Good luck with the scan 😍😍

Aww thanks and congratulations!

:)

Wishing you a lovely rest of your pregnancy.

It’s an internal scan and is checking for heartbeat, I had this done at the fertility clinic and after this was then discharged from the fertility clinic to my gp to continue with the standard antenatal care x

in reply to Shanks_21

They already discharged me as this is not IVF - We had a failed IVF the month before so...this was my first cycle after. They discharged us from fertility eeek! Scary!

I am with my GP now.....

So confusing as nobody (apart from this forum) tells you what happens :)

Hi dont worry about the tranvaginal scan I actually prefer it, where as the normal one they push so hard on your tummy it hurts me.

in reply to

Yes good point actually and don't need to drink so much water.

Xxx

No they make to pee before lol

in reply to

Hihi! Ah! 😅

I wish I was getting an earlier scan I mc at 12 weeks last time so im abit anxious i'm currently 7w+3

in reply to

So when is your scan? X

It'll just be the normal 12 weeks so around the 22nd July I have my booking in again on Tues 26th june at 8 week.

in reply to

That is a long wait.....almost as bad as TWW.

Shame it is not like on tv where you have a pregnancy test and jump for joy....haha it is 12 weeks of waiting 😆

Well hoping both our little beans stick 😀

Have you got many symptoms?

I am sweating, exhausted and my boobs are like melons! 🍉

I'm trying not to think about being pregnant and get excited just yet I havent told the kids yet hoping to wait til after the scan this time, it was awful having to tell them I was miscarrying. I have very little symptoms at the min just had cramping a week before due af which lasted a few more weeks, not really sore boobs just alittle bit. No sickness not even that tired. Im 38 aswel is this your first?

in reply to

Yes my first - so very very cautious.

Natural pregnancy so not on any extra drugs from the clinic...they said I don't need....

Best of Luck with everything - come on 12 weeks! 😀😀😀

Ahh well done, good luck to you too have to up date after your scan xx

in reply to

Will do 😙😙😙
