Gender: PGT-A embryo

Icsi_Wincy_Spider profile image

Hi, does anyone know whether the embryologist can write down the embryo gender after transfer and give it to me in a sealed envelope? Sounds crazy, but i dont usually want to know gender until there's a BFP as its too hard knowing i lost a "boy" or a "girl" but may change my mind and want to know sooner, or even do a surprise reveal for hubby and I if i get that far.

Depends what country you're based in. Gender selection and revealing via PGTA where no medical genetic reason is illegal in the UK

oh really? i'm in Australia and they can tell me AFTER the embryo has been transferred but not before. It was weird, i thought my consultant could look it up on the system but only the embryologists were allowed to reveal, and only to me (not my consultant).

I am in Australia too. Not sure which clinic you are with but with mine they always offer to tell me if I want to know after the first scan with heartbeat. If I say yes, they still have to email the testing lab which is not at the clinic and wait for a response. Last time it took another couple of weeks.

Repromed - how about you? Last time i did the same - emailed them and they called with the gender that afternoon. took a "bit of digging" to find out apparently, although the PGT-A is all done inhouse at Repromed. My lovely consultant was desperate for me to find out a few minutes after transfer, she kept asking "are you SURE u don't have any questions? are u sure u don't want to know anything "? 😂

Haha, that’s funny. I am with IVFA, they have the testing lab in Melbourne. I did not know there was a third one in Oz doing pgt testing. Never heard of your clinic.

I am waiting for a bit longer to find out now. My consultant already knows because I tell him I am SURE I know the gender and tell him. He was so curious if I am right he went to find out for himself 😂

Repromed are in Darwin and Adelaide, founded by Kelton Tremellen who invented Menevit (Elevit for males) :) I asked my consultant and she didnt know, said she wasnt allowed to know so i had to email the lab directly, crazy hey. Must be different rules in Victoria. I know you can apply for a special request to be granted to do a donor egg advert x

it’s illegal in the UK so you would need to ask a forum in Australia or your clinic

omg thats crazy - wonder why that is. every patient will find out the gender eventually in the process so why not immediately after transfer (i can understand not revealing before due to gender selection) 🤷🏼‍♀️

I am not sure. Perhaps it’s so that people don’t ask clinics for it before hand or clinics don’t make decisions based on gender and IVF patients don’t have a difference experience with regards to gender than a natural conception (which could encourage IVF just so they know earlier maybe 🤔 ). I don’t even think my clinic records the gender anywhere at all so not even sure they know the gender when they transfer it. Just the grading.

Either way I wouldn’t have wanted to know at such an early stage of the process as it would personally make it much tougher for me (and in fact didn’t find out gender of ours until he was in my arms 🤣) xx

i'm the same as u - last time i didnt find out until the viability scan at 9 weeks as i know the "no heartbeat" scenario all too well 😔💔 (they have the gender of my miscarriage too from d&c testing but i can't bear to find out💔)

just bot sure i have the patience this time, too curiously 😂 xx

I can understand that I’m so sorry for your losses 💜 xx

Did the FET, embryologist said they cant tell me gender until a positive viability scan at 8 weeks. Seems crazy as its not like i can do gender selection but apparently people DO do things if they are not happy with the gender in the early days 😲😢

I hope it all went superbly and you’re feeling positive and get a chance to relax and while away the next two weeks with happy things! X

good to you tomorrow  DreamingOfTwo79 , its so exciting but nerve wracking. i didnt realise but my day 6 embryo was fully hatched, wasn't expecting that. apparently the testing process encourages this as they've already made a hole to collect the cells for testing xx

Thank you so much! That all sounds excellent, here’s hoping you’ll soon get the news you hope for! Yes, ours was fully hatched at the point of biopsy, too, our clinic’s grading system gives an indication of the hatching status. Let’s hope it’ll warm up and expand well tomorrow! x

Your little Embie will be just fine, i actually asked an embryologist at my clinic about thawing rates and only 1 in 20 are lost in the thaw (5%). i was very relieved tho when my didnt ring this morning! 😂 good luck and let me know how u go. If they give you any more info re hatching and if it increases chances please let me know 🙏🏻 xxxx
