We've 1 frozen embryo left..my question is; can a frozen embryo be PGT tested before a transfer?

Can a FROZEN embryo be PGT tested before a frozen transfer?

How does that work?

I guess I want to know, can we test our last embryo to find out if it's euploid and perhaps save us the heartache of going through another transfer..

I think it can, but there is an increased risk of thawing, re-freezing, then thawing again for transfer...

Yes that's what I thought. My clinic don't actually do it so would have extra risk of having to transfer it somewhere else

hi, yes we tested 4 frozen embryos. They thaw then refreeze, they generally don’t do it on embryos graded BC, but you can ask embryologist. If it’s your last embryo, I would transfer it - pgta isn’t always 100% accurate and I’ve also heard of aneuploid embryos correcting themselves once transferred.

The heart ache of a aneuploid embryo can be as heartbreaking as a failed transfer. If you had multiple embryos, I’d advise to test, but one - personally I’d go for it. Good luck x

Thanks for your response, I had 7 untested embryos. I just found out embryo 5&6 failed in my current FET. I just don't think I have it in me to do another transfer, as all 6 have failed so far. When I started IVF, PGT was not a common step in IVF but I do wish we had had the option to test. My clinic don't offer it and as we are in a private clinic, it is seen as a big extra expense.

I’m so sorry to hear - I didn’t realise your history 😓 what a tough and long journey. It’s definitely very personal - I have some regrets after testing as I do have a small ‘what if’ in my mind, but equally, it could have saved me a lot of further heart ache too. I have one left untested which I will transfer and there’s too much risk involved thawing and re freezing. Seems like we face risk at every stage of this journey.

Wishing you lots of luck x

Wishing you all the best! There is risk at every stage and yes it's probably best just to transfer and see. It's such a hard road and an emotional rollercoaster 🎢

A frozen embryo can be thawed and tested. But whilst you await the result it would need to be re-frozen and if suitable for transfer would be thawed a second time. I had one untested embryo left recently and was advised by the embryology team at the clinic not to test it because of it having to go through all of these stages. But it is a personal decision perhaps dependent on your history, ultimately is up to you - maybe get the thoughts of your embryology team x x

Thank you for response. Yes there are probably too many steps to risk testing one embryo and it's not the highest grade.

hello

We had them tested, frozen, thawed, retested and frozen again. But I do agree with some of the comments below…there are a lot of limitations with testing!
