If I transfer 2 embyo’s

Does anybody know, if I was to transfer 2 embryos & say only 1 implanted?

What happens to the other? Would I bleed? Does it put the implanted embryo at risk?

I have only had SET FET before, and we usually do PGT, but I am just thinking of other options for this cycle.. and was wondering about the double transfer…

Hi, no you wouldn’t bleed, I think if only 1 implants the other just sort of gets absorbed. I have had positive tests after 3 double transfers, they’ve only ever been singleton pregnancies and I didn’t bleed if that helps xx

thank you.

I bled at 6 weeks with my daughter & luckily it was just as a result of the pessaries, but I bled at 6 weeks with my second transfer & I miscarried at 7 weeks, so I just have a fear of the bleeds 🙈

Ah I’m so sorry. I completely understand! I bled on and off with my son too and then during miscarriages but they were a bit later (both early losses but after the implantation stage) so not to do with the 2nd embryo if that makes sense?

I think there’s research to show that transferring 2 can hinder the success of the best embryo if there’s a significant difference in grading but some clinics don’t really buy into that idea. Wishing you loads of luck x

thank you.

It will really depend on how many we have by D5. If we only have 1 or 2, I might just transfer, but if we have more, then I’ll freeze & test x

I transferred 2 embryos and did not have a bleed until way after my singleton pregnancy was confirmed. I know the bleed was related to something completely different and not the other embryo.

It was exactly the same as transferring a single embryo that did not implant. I did not know it had not implanted until test day and my period came after I stopped my pessaries.

Wishing you luck with your cycle.

I had 2 FET, only 1 implemented and the doctor did say the other one gets absorbed by your body, but I had no bleeding from it. Hope all goes well for you.

we transferred 2 in the last cycle and now have 5 week old twins. We transferred 2 previous cycle and have a 22 months old daughter, the other embryo just didn’t stick and I didn’t bleed. Our daughter was IVF attempt number 9, previous cycles were all single embryo transfers. As a twin mum I’d like to say that twin pregnancy is a lot harder than singleton due to extra weight on your body and more hormones. Also it’s very hard looking after newborn twins - mine still feed every 2/3 hours. If you are up for the possible challenge of twins than put 2 in.

I’m sure it’s tough with the twins.

My main thought is that with being 41 I’d be lucky to get 1 goodie, so I think put 2 in & hope 1 sticks. I want this to be my last transfer so I don’t want to have a single transfer, it fail & then have to go back again.

I’m mentally ready for this to be the last process. x

sounds like putting 2 in is the way to go. Good luck :-)

Transferred two. Only one took. No bleed but still got twins. Good luck.

you must have been destined to have twins!

it feels like it. We didn’t have the money for private treatment and the nhs funding (while better than other areas) limited us. It was a moon shot and it paid off. ☺️ I’ll be honest though, when they told me they were checking for the third the reality of the choice sank in and I wasn’t sure if I was excited or freaked out.

I’m sure 😂😂 congrats though. 😃

Hi we transferred two, I bled a lot in the first trimester but still ended up with twins. I think the other embryo would be absorbed if it didn’t implant. Our embryos were of different quality but I do wonder if I hadn’t transferred both of them if either would have implanted! I felt at the time that if I transferred two they might encourage each other to implant lol cos when they implant they secrete the Hcg hormone and I figure if they secrete the hormone the more they implant? 🤷🏻‍♀️

Good luck whichever you decide xx

Hi Mrsjaytee, we transferred two, one implanted ❤️ and there was no bleeding. My understanding is that the bleeding is normally caused by the fact that with no implantation, the hormones levels that prevent your endometrium lining from breaking drop and cause a period to start. If one implants, hormones should not drop so you shouldn’t see more bleeding. Of course, there are many other reason you could bleed while pregnant but one not implanting shouldn’t condition that. Xx
