Covid during pregnancy

I’ve just found out I’m 5 weeks pregnant after 3 years of trying, 2 years under clinic for infertility and 3 rounds of IVF/ICSI and 4 days after my positive preg test I’ve tested positive for Covid.

I spoke to emergency midwife at hospital last night who said Covid can’t affect the embryo and to rest, drink fluids etc etc as you would if had Covid not pregnant, however I can’t help but worry.

Has anyone else had a similar situation and had Covid in their first trimester that can reassure me that it won’t affect the development of the embryo?

I’m trying to relax about this but I googled online before calling midwife and read that it can cause premature birth an all other stuff and can’t help but worry.

After having the best week of my life I now feel I’m in a nightmare.

Sorry if this is now the wrong group to post in as it’s not IVF related

hey, I am not a medical professional but this is my understanding. I also had covid at 13 weeks.

The biggest problem with covid and premature birth is in the third trimester. The rest of the time you really need to just focus on making sure you don’t get a high temperature as that is likely the thing that will do damage. Being pregnant can also cause you to be at greater risk of clots so I was told if I could safely and avoiding other do a little walk and felt up to it then I should - I would go out with a mask and keep away from people (but that was relatively easy where I live.) good luck and please try not to stress (easier said than done) as that will likely make things worse. Xx

thank you for your message. The midwife sad to take paracetamol for temperature but I am worried to take this even though everyone says it’s fine in pregnancy. Did you take it? Xx

I took it to bring the temperature down - I monitored mine every hour and made a graph (yes I’m sad, but was in a room on my own!) I made a personal decision that when I got a fever it was time to take the meds - I was running a little hot in pregnancy anyway but went with about 37.4 I think! X

Hi LittleT, I caught covid at 6 weeks it took 2 weeks for me to test negative. I have never felt soo ill in my life had the horrible cough all my stomach muscles hurt from coughing, lost my sense of taste and smell, muscles and joints ached soo much. I had morning sickness at the same time so was being sick also. I barely ate or moved from sofa for those two weeks. Took me a few more weeks to fully recover. I'm now almost 33 weeks and baby is absolutely fine. If you are worried you can always get an oximeter and put it on your finger to measure oxygen levels it will beep if they get too low at which point you would need to go to hospital, the midwives in my area will bring one to you if you get covid. But at that point we hadn't registered with them so my husband got one off amazon for us, checked my levels every few hours and it was reassuring to know they were good. Rest up plenty of fluids and hope you feel better soon x

Ah I’m sorry! I had it at 9-10 weeks and all was fine at my 12 week scan, baby bouncing around and measuring ahead. If you get a fever definitely take paracetamol to bring it down and drink tonnes of fluids. Hope you don’t feel too rough x
