Hi Ladies

Have received my amh result today and is 10.2 np/mol. I am 37.

Is this good, bad or does not real matter?

thanks

As I understand it AMH is an indicator of your ovarian reserve or in the case of IVF it is an indicator of how many eggs they would expect to get in an egg collection cycle. With an AMH of 10 I understand that they would generally expect 10. That said I know people who have got less than their AMH suggests or several more than their AMH suggests as it can depend on how well suited you are to the protocol they use. Sometimes as we age it can fluctuate too. Mine was 6.9 one month and 8.3 a month or so later but I still only got 5 or 6 eggs at egg collection. Fast forward a year and I was still getting 5 eggs on a protocol which suppresses the number of eggs you get in order to try to get them to grow together but it is inconceivable to think my AMH wouldnt have gone down in that period as I went from aged 44 to 45. An AMH of 10 sounds good to me.

mine was 11.5 at 37, so fairly similar to yours. The doctor at the clinic told me this was indicative of borderline diminished ovarian reserve and recommended proceeding with ivf within the next two months - we had been ttc for around 2 years by that point and I had a blocked tube, so it was looking unlikely that it would happen naturally and increasingly likely that ivf was the only option for us anyway.

I panicked and got pretty upset on hearing that prognosis, but came to understand that actually my AMH level was fairly average for my age. If there are no other reasons standing in the way of natural conception, it would be very possible to conceive. Unfortunately sometimes it’s hard to know if there are any other issues as so many are difficult/impossible to diagnose

The significance of AMH levels for IVF clinics is they give an indication of roughly how many eggs to expect and therefore the likelihood of success per cycle. My doctor felt I had a 25% chance of success based on my age and AMH and guessed they could expect to retrieve 7 or 8 eggs, which I think was a conservative estimate. But he felt I needed to move quickly as with that starting point and my age, it was likely chances would decrease fairly rapidly

In the end, I did three full cycles -as in three egg collections with one fresh transfer from each. The first got 12 mature eggs, the second 2 and the third 8. I only got three blastocysts from the first two cycles, which is a well below average rate and potential indication that my egg quality was also declining. Eventually we had success on our third cycle

So based purely on what I learned from my own experience, I would say that your AMH shows you have an ovarian reserve very typical of a 37 year old woman, but the things to be aware of are that statistically it is linked to chances of success per ivf cycle and these can decline rapidly as quantity and quality of eggs often decline rapidly at this age. If you can’t conceive naturally and you need ivf, if possible it’s better to do it as soon as possible and be prepared for a few cycles

I found all this very difficult to deal with at the time and I hope you are doing ok, whatever your situation and have good support around you

I agree with KatRee, 10 is about average for your age (mine was 16 and told that was high but that dropped to 9 by 39). The main thing is I wouldn't get too hung up on it. If you are going ahead with IVF then I would sort of ignore it with the exception of (as everyone else has said) it gives you a rough idea of how many eggs you might get. When my AMH was 16 I got 13 eggs, when it was 9 I got between 7 and 10. However beyond that its only a guide and is absolutely nothing to do with egg quality. I got all excited my AMH was high for my age and thought that meant I was guaranteed a successful first IVF round, but the reality was my egg quality wasn't great and there just isn't a test for that. That's not to say yours isn't good, I was just unlucky. Likewise I know someone who had an AMH of less than 1 and was told she needed IVF and she got pregnant by accident the month before she started a donor egg round and baby is now 2!

Fundamentally IVF is a numbers game with a bit of luck thrown in, so you should have a decent chance of a good egg. But also don't panic too much if someone says its a 'bit low' because you could have a low AMH and excellent quality eggs.

Heaps of luck x

Hi Preety1983

I'm in a very similar boat to you - with the added complexity of low sperm count from OH

My NHS clinic has told me we will be going straight to IVF due to the sperm count, and I guess my results will only confirm that too - which I am ok with as ultimately we just want to grow our family.

Waiting for my next appt to confirm plan in 4 weeks

Good luck with everything x

My AMH was lower than this, I think it was 7.8 and I was 36/37. when I started fertility treatment. It was considered to be the lower end of normal. My clinic said they didn’t used to share the number because it causes people unnecessary stress. They said it helps them work out the best level of stimulation medication. I was really lucky, we had our first little boy after our second round of IVF, we had two blastocysts, the first didn’t work and our son was the result of FET. Our first round was a disaster, we didn’t make it to transfer.

We then went in to have a second son, who was conceived naturally. I hope this gives you hope, I remember feeling the odds were against us when we were going through treatment. My best piece of advice is to try not to get too hung up on numbers. I did and it is not easy not too. I genuinely believe that a positive mindset and trying not to put too much pressure on yourself really helps. Best of luck to you xxx
