Progesterone in early pregnancy

Hi,

Hope everyone is doing ok. I have had one previous miscarriage and had a small bleed last week at nearly 7 weeks pregnant. Has anyone been given progesterone for pregnancies? I saw the updated NICE guidance is "to Offer vaginal micronised progesterone 400 mg twice daily to women with an intrauterine pregnancy confirmed by a scan, if they have vaginal bleeding and have previously had a miscarriage." I just rang the EPAU and they said that they haven't updated their guidance yet but are going to and seeing as I have some left over from IVF I can just start taking it. Just feels a bit dodgy when it's not prescribed but they said no harm in taking it. Thanks in advance for any replies! xx

Hi Zoe, I wouldn’t worry about taking it.You can have too little progesterone but not too much. Better to have a higher amount for sure

Hi, I rang my doctor and got crinone gel through them, I had no issues, I just advised I have had a previous loss and been bleeding in this pregnancy and they gave me 2 boxes...I do have some left over from my FET but only had enough to do me until 7 weeks so wanted to get more in in good time...have u had ur first scan yet? Just read one of your previous posts about symptom loss and I am feeling the same today 🙈 don’t know if it’s my mind playing tricks but feel like my sore breasts are completely gone which was my own real symptom...x

Thank you for your reply. I managed to get some through my GP. How are you getting on? After that symptom loss post I had a bleed so had an early scan and everything looked ok. I'm super worried at the moment though as I don't really have any symptoms and haven't had any sickness at all xx

Hi, that’s good you got some from GP, I had a bleed about 5 weeks and had scan and everything looked ok and had another scan 5 days ago and could see heartbeat, I do have a SCH so they r bringing me back on Wednesday for another scan to see if it has absorbed, am hoping it has as I haven’t had anymore bleeding...I have started getting sick passed few days but nothing major just sick feeling...I spoke to doctor about no symptoms when I didn’t have any and was advised not to worry and to try and enjoy being pregnant. How far on are you now? Xx

Glad your scans have been ok. I hope your SCH has gone now. I am 9 weeks 3 days now but my only scan was at 6 weeks 6 days so it was a while ago. How far along are you? I'm glad your Dr said not to worry about symptoms! Hope you are doing ok x

Hi, I took it until I was 12 weeks pregnant. It can't harm the baby, in fact it helps the baby stick better. I wouldn't think twice, after 3 loses I think it did help. Good luck! 😃

It was very important for us and I'm convinced it was the reason we struggled to conceive and then had two early losses - as soon as I was switched to vaginal pessaries I had a completely different experience. Also when I came off at 12 weeks, I spotted and had bleeding and the hospital suggested going back on them. Doctors have said if it can't hurt as you should produce so much naturally when pregnant and extra support can only help.

My clinic generally only gives progesterone (cyclogest pessaries) to fresh cycles for the two week wait. However, our only previous transfer ended in a missed miscarriage and so I had done some reading myself and spoke to clinic at transfer about taking it longer as I read that RCOG have recently said that progesterone may help reduce the chance of miscarriage if taken in all pregnancies. The clinic agreed there could be a benefit to continuing to take it and said they would want me to keep taking it to 12 weeks if I continues. I’m 12 weeks on Monday and so far so good. I had a bleed at 8 weeks which the clinic actually thought may have been irritation from the pessaries and I have achy inner leg muscles, am breathless when walking the dog and had very crampy stomachs from bloating which they say all the addition progesterone causes as it can relax you muscles but if it has kept baby safe for the last few months it is all good. Good luck! Xx

That’s great you got some from your GP. We had our 12 week scan last week and all good so I have phased off the pessaries over the weekend and today is my first day of no progesterone so hopefully it’s done it’s job and I now start to feel a bit more lively. Good luck!

My clinic sends me home with enough cyclogest to get just past the two week wait and a letter for my GP to prescribe it after that to take up to 12 weeks so definitely safe to take while you’re at 7/8 weeks.

Hey Zoe, progesterone helps prevent any bleeding that might happen early on and prevent an early miscarriage. Some women have compromised cervix’s and that’s why they prescribe it- and it’s the gentle hormone compared to oestrogen. Once the placenta forms at 12 weeks then it takes over administering this hormone but some women are advised to take it beyond. I stopped mine at 7 weeks after ivf fet - at their advise it was fine but they also said I could continue and no harm so if I were you I’d take it. It won’t harm - only help if it needs to.

So I had an early menopause and was taking progesterone, different kind in pregnancy. Did ivf in Prague egg donation and currently 7/5 weeks pregnant I’m on 3x progesterone pessaries a day and the clinic have advised to stop at 12 weeks. I had a big bleed at 5 weeks the EPU told me I was having a m/c then a smaller bleed a week later. They say the placenta takes over at 12 weeks but I’m so worried as my body before falling pregnant didn’t make progesterone and I’m concerned that I may lose my baby xx
