What is the embryo glue and does all clinics offer it?
Hi Vicky, it's normally an extra add-on so it might be worth checking your clinic's price list. It supposed to help the embryo implant, with limited proven results. My clinic started including it in all FET cycles but they charge £2363 per FET so I assume I pay for it somewhere. They are usually quite reluctant to use add-ons, so it might be there is new data supporting it's use?
It’s basically a thicker solution for the embryo to be transferred in than the normal watery solution clinics use as standard. I discovered it was available at my clinic following an ectopic pregnancy in January. For me it reduced the stress of our next attempt, as it was less likely the embryo would be able to move and end up in my remaining tube if we used the glue. I’m currently 25 weeks pregnant so would say it’s the best £250 we have ever spent! I wouldn’t say our clinic recommended it at all, but the consultant agreed it might help our chances.
My clinic do offer it, they charge £180 for it , and say ‘we can’t say it works but can’t say it doesn’t work, so it’s your choice’. Not exactly a recommendation but they do it if you ask (I was going to use it in my last FET but then couldn’t as the embryo hatched and they said in that case it wasn’t appropriate, will try again in our next FET in a couple of months).
The glue has an enzyme that supposed to help implantation. You can read more about it on the HFEA site hfea.gov.uk/treatments/trea... a government sponsored site so trustworthy. I had 4 transfers with glue and 1 without (I moved abroad and they don't have it here in the Netherlands). The one without is the only one where the baby 'stuck' (so far
🤞) x
I found after after my FET that my clinic use the glue as standard (it was buried in the notes somewhere). I got a BFP on 3dp5dt and now 16wks. So whatever happened on that transfer worked (previous two fresh transfers took but HCG was much weaker and ended around 6 weeks). I read the glue didn't make much or any difference but it doesn't do any harm so I would have it again just to repeat what happened on the successful transfer x
I asked my clinic about it in February, before my second transfer. They'd never mentioned it before and I discovered it was a thing through this site. They said they don't recommend it as there was no evidence of its success. My transfer failed, but I did opt to use it for my third transfer. It cost £150. I'm now 33 weeks pregnant. I can't say it's what did the trick or not, but it helped put my mind at ease knowing I was doing everything I possibly could to help our chances x
