Anyone have success after first FET with a PGS normal embryo ended in a chemical pregnancy?

Hi Everyone,

I recently had my first FET with my only PGS normal embryo. The FET ended in a chemical pregnancy. As the embryo was very good quality and PGS normal, I had high hopes that it'd work. My partner and I are only doing IVF for genetic reasons (to avoid passing on a gene disorder I'm a carrier for), and as far as we know we don't have any fertility issues. We're planning to have a second round of IVF in September/October, but I'm worried we may end up with just 1 PGS normal embryo again and that it'll end in a similar way to our last FET. The fact we only got one PGS normal embryo out of 5 at age 35 and this FET with a PGS normal failed is making me worry that maybe I have egg quality issues or that there is an issue with how our embryos develop. With that context in mind, my questions are as follows:

Should I take the fact I had a chemical pregnancy as a good sign that we could be successful with a second FET?

Have any of you had a chemical pregnancy from a first FET with a PGS normal and then had success on a second attempt?

Hi mudra85, i never had a chemical before but on my first transfer with a PGS tested embryo i was unsuccessful. On my second transfer using my last PGS tested embryos I was successful. For my second transfer I used steriods and blood thinner to assist with the transfer and both embryos stick around. I am 27+ weeks along with twins. Also, I was 33 when i did my retrieval and i tested 8 embryos and i only got 3 normal embryos. So i wouldn't think too deep on the quality of the embryos because alot of people dont get a high result when do the PGS tested, although those embryos made it to day 5. Good luck

Hi Mellyboo111, thanks so much for your reply and congratulations on your pregnancy! Was there anything else that they changed for your second FET protocol other than including blood thinners and steroids?

I was on blood thinners for my last FET but not steroids.

The drugs where the same but i total forgot i did intralipids 1 hour before transfer which i never did before. I also did acupuncture the day before transfer to get relax a lady told me about that. So basically i did one round of intralipids before transfer, steriods, blood thinner and one round acupuncture ,that i never did before in my first transfer.

Thanks for providing that info. I'll be having a follow up consultation soon and it's very handy to know what other people did differently so that I can ask my consultant about what we might need to change for my next FET (if we get any PGS normals this time). All the very best to you.

I had a chemical last November with a PGS normal embryo and was successful with the second FET in July. Currently 8 weeks. Single embryo transfer both times. With both transfers I did estrogen tablets, progesterone in oil shots, blood thinner shots and low dose aspirin. With the second, the only change was to add low dose steroids. My doctor just chalked up the loss to bad luck. However, I have a history of endometriosis (had removal surgery in 2018). I suspect it may have somewhat returned, which could have been a factor in the first one not sticking around, and why it worked on the second go with steroids. Best of luck!

Congrats on your pregnancy and thank you for replying! I think I'll ask about steroids for my next FET (if we get to that stage) as a lot of people mention having them on a second go. All the best to you too!

Transferred 1 embryo 5AB and was a chemical pregnancy. Then transferred 2, 5BB and 5BC both stuck we are now 26 weeks pregnant with twins. All embryos were PGS tested. I was also on steroids, blood thinner, aspirin, thyroxin, immunosuppressants. Having a chemical is actually a good sign, even though it sounds kind of ridiculous 🙄🙂 You have greater chances with PGS tested embryos. Xx

Hi Ranchu90, congrats on your twins! I have read that women who have chemical pregnancies have a higher likelihood of success with a second transfer. I hope our experience was just a spell of bad luck but I worry about the same thing happening again and now we have have to hope we get at least another PGS embryo from this next round of IVF Xx

I think right protocol plays an important role in having a viable pregnancy. Steroids in my case made the difference, this is my opinion. I had 3 chemicals in the past, 2 with untested embryos but the successful cycle was the only one on steroids. I don't have any autoimmune issues, I been tested for NK cells and all came back normal. Speak with your doctor and don't accept the same protocol as last time 🤞🤗♥️

My first FET failed with PGS normal embryo. I was on blood thinners and short protocol then 2nd transfer worked. We added intralipids x 2 before transfer and 2 after bfp, prednisolone steroids, endometrial scratch and did a long protocol and I'm now 25 weeks. Good luck.
