Success stories with 2 PGS normal embryos?

Hi everyone,

After 4 egg collections in 6 months, 54 eggs collected in total, 16 blastocysts and 1 transfer of 2 non tested embryos, I finally caved and PGS tested all of my frozen embryos (reason being, I'm 42 and wanted to know if I could stop doing egg collections): I only got 2 PGS normal embryos as a result, the rest being all abnormal. I am preparing to start another egg collection in 10 days, but given my age, who knows if this egg collection will yield another PGS normal embryo. Are there any success stories out there with only 2 PGS normal embryos?

Wow that’s a lot of egg collections! I also have 2 PGS normal embryos. I think that’s a good amount. We’ve just had a transfer cancelled sadly but will going again in Jan so I’ll let you know! Good luck x

Hi Dogpark,

It’s great you have 2. I guess I am just wondering why you feel the need to do more egg collections and why your clinic would recommend this?

If I were you I’d progress to a FET. The chances of implantation and a successful pregnancy are all in your favour with a genetically normal embryo.

I think you should be thrilled with that and progress with confidence. You literally now have done all the hard work.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do next. X

Hi Mogwai_2

I'm turning 43 at the end of this year, so if I start transferring now and nothing works, in 6 months, things might look bleaker than now, I might not even produce eggs anymore.

Therefore, I feel this is my last chance to collect eggs. I'm the decision maker here, my clinic is not pushing for more egg collections, but I'm really panicking that 2 won't be enough.

A friend of mine got 4 pgs normal embryos after 4 cycles and she already transferred 2 (one after the other), and none of them attached. She's now really scared because she only has 2 PGS normal embryos left and her last egg collection did not produce any egg, so she has no chance to get more.

When I started this journey, at the beginning of the year, I thought that getting 2 pgs normal embryos at my age would be fantastic, and now it suddenly looks like it's not enough :(

Are you using PGS yourself?

Understanding the journey your friend is having I can now see why you are worried. I presume what she’s going through is hopefully rare?!

I used PGS on IVF cycle 2 and all came back abnormal (4 day 5/6 and 2 day 7). I was told to expect 1 in 5 day 5/6 blasts for my age (40-41) to be normal. The clinic therefore said it’s a numbers game, because like you, I generally produce a decent number of them. We didn’t on IVF 3 as we only got 1 blast (bad cycle all round) and the economics didn’t make sense (can see my journey in my profile).

I’m still recovering from a twin MMC from the transfer of 2 untested embryos from IVF 1. Once I have we’re doing another IVF cycle and will genetically test if we get enough blasts.

When I asked my clinic about their PGS success rates they said so far they have had 100% success for implantation but clearly some women do sadly go on to miscarry. Hopefully your clinic is giving you the reassurance of their stats as I appreciate your friend’s circumstances must be scaring you.

I totally get where you're coming from on age, possible delays from miscarriage / embryos not implanting and decisions about further IVF cycles. I feel exactly the same.

Only you can know what’s best for you. It’s so tough isn’t it!

I’m currently waiting for the genetics on my miscarriage. Hoping they were genetically abnormal otherwise I have even more to worry about (ie that the problem is me, not the embryo).

Hang in there. Same here, doing the math, I could have transferred a pgs normal embryo and it didn't attached, and this gets me worried. I was also told to expect 16-20% of embryos to be normal. I was also told that this can be random, or some cycles may have none and then the following cycles may have several normals. For me it looks like my first 2 cycles might have yielded nothing (I also had one cycle which was just plain bad with only one blastocyst), then the last 2 cycles yielded one each, which is better than none but still painfully slow. My clinic told me that they had 52% pregnancy rates and then 44% live birth rates per embryo. Where is your clinic based?

Mine is in London.

It’s reassuring to know that some of the stats being cited are consistent across clinics and also for me to hear your journey in terms of collecting embryos and the testing results. It provides hope that further cycles for us might yield success.

I presume your clinic’s pregnancy and live birth rates are for all blasts transferred, not just PGS ones? I ask as I’d have thought the rates would be higher for transfer of known genetically normal embryos.

While my clinic has had great success with PGS transfers they did say they expect implantation rates to end up averaging 90% for PGS normal embryos and I believe miscarriage rates are also lower.

Hi Mogwai_2 Theses are rates for PGS normal embryos. No clinic ended up quoting more than 60-70% implantation to me. How many PGS transfers has your clinic performed? This might be the reason why numbers differed.

For untested embryos in my age range, 40-42, they quoted something like 31% live birth rate if you transfer 2 untested embryos at once. I believe my clinic is really well known for its success rates in the UK.

Thanks for this.

The clinic is reasonably newly established (my first IVF was with its Director when he worked independently), so I suspect you are right that it is skewing the results (and they too said they’d drop).

When we start our next cycle I’ll probe more into their PGS data.

Is your clinic in London also? Would be interested to know who you’re with if so, if you don’t mind messaging me privately. I think I’m happy where we are, but sometimes wonder about seeking the advice of others.

Finally, in terms of supplements did your clinic prescribe or was it based on personal research?

In terms of supplements I’m following what CCRM in Colorado recommend as my friend’s had treatment there. I am also taking a number of the things you are. I’m sure if someone shook me I’d rattle! 😂

Hi there! Wow that’s a lot of collecting you’re very brave!I’ve just had 3 tested and have 1 normal. I’m in the last chance saloon so I’m combining it with the implantation testing so we can put the embryo in at the right time. This, according to my consultant gives the max chance of success. Obviously if it doesn’t work then that will be the end of it but it might b worth speaking to your dr about doing that too - test cycle so they can rule out any issues before putting the embryo in x
