Going through first icsi ivf. Egg extraction tomorrow morning. Am so nervous but also excited. Don’t really know what to expect afterwards tbh.

Any advice or words of wisdom would be great.

Hi Amber, it's quite an easy procedure and the consultant and anesthetist will explain everything for you.

You'll be asleep for about 15 minutes while they collect the eggs and then they'll wake you up - and they'll tell you how many eggs they retrieved. I normally also got a call from the embryologist confirming ICSI and informing about the sperm sample.

For ICSI the eggs will need to be mature, so they'll update you the next day on the number of eggs that fertilised.

You'll feel a bit groggy after and maybe some mild cramping (sometimes spotting) and normally better by the next day. Plan to relax the rest of the day ❤️

Good luck 🤞🤞

Thank you for your response. Fingers crossed we get a few eggs and some that fertilise.

Best of luck for your egg collection. It's a very simple procedure, the sedation is quite strange as you're aware that you are awake (or at least I was) and chatting away with the anesthesiologist, but can't remember a word of what you were saying afterwards. I had some amazing tea and toast when I was a bit more with it in the hospital then was allowed home around an hour later. You'll need to have someone with you for the rest of the day. I had some cramping and felt a little sore afterwards, but felt amazing in comparison to what I expected. They had issues trying to get the needle in my hand for the sedation, that was honestly the worst part of the whole procedure for me. I still have a bit of a bruised hand 3 weeks later.

I had ICSI too, we got a call the next day, which is classed as day 1, to advise on how many eggs were mature (we had 12 collected, 10 were mature), and then how many have fertilisted (we had 6 fertilise). We then got a call on day 3 to update that 5 of our 6 were still doing well and to schedule a day 5 transfer. We spoke to the embryologist on the morning of our transfer who advised us that our embryos hadn't grown as well as expected, but surprisingly they wanted to transfer 2 which were at morula stage. As it stands, I got my BFP over the weekend there so it looks like at least one of the embryos have implanted

😀. Just enjoy each stage of the process as it comes, and celebrate the mini wins. I guess there is no guarantee that any of us will make it to transfer to just take it one stage at a time and don't allow yourself to get too carried away. Although I've had a BFP, I'm still protecting myself by not getting carried away until my 7 week scan (in two weeks time). I wish you all the best for your IVF journey 🥰

Am home. Wasn’t as bad as I thought. Just a little sore which is expected. Was very lucky with 21 being retrieved but as we all know not all will get to next stage
