Hello tomorrow morning I’m having my egg retrieval done after 10 days of meds. Was wondering for anyone who has gone through it. How drugged are you? I mean after 2-3 hrs are you ok and can function as normal? Apparently I have around 20 eggs or so and I’m just a little stressed as never done this before...
Thank you all for your answers xx

It’s just a light sedation - enough so you don’t feel anything but not too much to make you feel out of it after! I was really worried about that part too but it was fine.
You just need to rest for a bit after, have a cuppa and a snack ☺️and once you’re home just relax and maybe have a sleep 😴 I chilled out at the clinic then left with a friend, had some lunch then went home and watched tv in bed.
Thank you so much. Now I just need to pray that at least one is good from what I know egg quantity means nothing only egg quality and that is not something you can test for before right?
Hiya! I was so nervous about the sedation, but it really wasn’t anything to worry about. It’s true when they say it’s like going for a nap. After the surgery I wasn’t groggy, but I was in quite a bit more pain than I was expecting. I had 23 eggs collected, so that probably had something to do with it. I had to take it very easy for about 3 days after the collection.
Wow that’s as many as I have apparently and they have started me on an antibiotic from today. Maybe that’s why? Did you have successful embryo transfer?? How many of the 23 were good?
I unfortunately had the worst luck you could possibly have. Out of the 23, 15 fertilized, but by day three all of the embryos were very poor quality - too poor to transfer or freeze.
I should emphasize that this is an extremely rare thing to happen with so many eggs fertilized (my doctor said it happens about 1% of the time). So I do not want my story to freak you out. But I wish I had gone in knowing it was a possibility because I was so shocked when I got the call.
Hi Corchi. Good luck for tomorrow! 20 eggs! Wow! You should get a good "haul".
At one fertility clinic I was sedated, which is where you're knocked out but you come round pretty quick (nothing like general anaesthetic), but at the other fertility clinic they don't even knock people out, they just use a local anaesthetic. From what I can tell, that's unusual though.
From the two sedations I've had: one I went out to the theatre that evening after and the other I had to get the tube across London and train back home to Berkshire, so really nothing like general anaesthetic. I'm not recommending you do these things... I'm just saying! Lol, unfortunately those were the circumstances for me.
I’m exhausted and so hormonal. I don’t even recognize myself and I’m so bloated, boobs killing me, pimples on my face and of course husband does not fully understand any of what I’m going through ....
The sedation is great as it wears off pretty quickly but you don’t remember anything about the collection, the last thing I remembered was being told I’d feel a chill in my arm then as I adamantly declared I didn’t I fell asleep 😂.
I got 18 eggs and felt a little sick afterwards to be honest, however as soon as I said the anaesthetist gave me more anti emetic and within 20 mins I started to feel better and was up eating my toast and peeing so I could go home.
Eeek! good luck for tomorrow, You will be absolutely fine.
Sedation seems to vary from hospital to hospital. Mine felt like a GA - I was completely knocked out so don’t remember a thing. Felt a little tired and queasy after but I didn’t sleep much the night before so was probably a mix of both. Nothing an afternoon of Netflix and lucozade didn’t fix. X
Hi! I had around 20 to collect, got 14. Sedation was fine I was however very uncomfortable when I woke up, I had a 3&half hour drive home and would suggest a hot water bottle and very comfy trousers or leggings. I wanted to cry with the pain but not because it was sore (sounds mad) just with the situation and feeling like I had been through something. Good luck! X
Sounds promising. I had around 20 follicles, from which they got 9 mature eggs. From those we have 1 baby and 3 more embryos 'on ice'.
The antibiotic is preventative as they have to go through the wall of the vagina to get to the ovaries and it's to prevent infection there.
I felt surprisingly rough for a couple of days after, but I had mild OHSS and ended up having a freeze-all cycle. Some people feel fine after but I needed the day off work the next day and still didn't feel great when I was back 2 days after collection. Be prepared that you might need to take some time off, but hopefully you won't. Best of luck, I hope you get loads of good-quality little eggs - keep us posted!!
33 eggs and crazy painful after like a bad miscarriage. Then took so many painkillers that felt sick. Was under 20’. Let’s pray we get some good ones from all these !!!
Wow, 33!! Feet up, drink loads of water and tell your OH it's very important you be waited on hand and foot!! Hope you recover quickly and hope you get good numbers fertilized and developing xxx
My anaesthetist was hot which helped 😂 I remember going into the room, mask on, looked at the ceiling and the next thing I knew I was back in the room . Defo plan to rest for several days after. I was tired on and off for rest of next couple of days before I felt like myself.
Definitely wrap yourself up in a blanket or quilt on the couch and watch good movies. I was told no hot water bottle as it encourages the internal wounds to bleed. I took some co. Odamol for two days after then some paracetamol . Feels like a tired cramp than major pain after.
I remember being nervous though too. Yet when I got to the clinic they put me at ease because they are all so aware of the process and are total professionals.
They will tell you as soon as you wake up how many eggs you have then should repeat what their process is for the following days and the updates etc.
Hi Corchi, good look for tomorrow, very exciting and around 20 is a fab number!! My experience is similar to everybody else’s. I’d never had any kind of surgery before so was really nervous but it was fine. I had a heavy sedation and don’t remember a thing after the cannula going in my hand. When I came round I had a cup of tea and some toast then was on my way home. Just felt a little tired and some light cramps in the evening but otherwise fine. Just take it easy, put your feet and have an early night. You’ll be fine xx
I just wanted to wish you good luck! It’s my egg retrieval this morning too! So excited but also nervous (1st time) lets hope for lots of follicles/eggs x
Hope all went well! I had 33 eggs and excruciating pain when I woke. Still in pain now but nothing like before. Let’s just hope it’s all worth it in the end and now I pray for them to make it to day 5!!!!
I wish you all the baby dust in the world!! I am still in pain feel like my insides have been pulled apart - now all I can think about is the next part!!! 😘
Eeek just got my call! 16 fertilized eggs and 9 frozen eggs (they had to freeze some because my husbands first sperm retrieval wasn’t good, second was fine but they were getting worried)
I got 16 fertilized eggs (so day 1 embryos) and 9 eggs are frozen. What does this mean I don’t know? When you say still going strong what do you mean? What does each day mean?
I’m doing FET my doctor believes better chances. I guess just has to do with which doctor and which circumstance I don’t know. I also need to build up my endometrium which is not thick enough as of right now
No it’s horrific. Spoke to docs throughout the day. They said no chance over hyper stimulation as I had done a trigger shot a few days ago and am taking meds to shrink everything. I just reacted to meds a bit too well and they pierced 35 follicles to remove eggs so apparently normal for my size as well. I am tiny. Bed rest, pain killers and a lot of protein rich diet and should be ok in a few days ... so you transferring your eggs Wednesday? How exciting
I had some tea and toast at the hospital and then went home and chilled out on the sofa with a duvet and the dog. I went back to work the next day and felt OK.
