Anyone conceive naturally at 43?

I'm 43 and have been trying for a year now. My history is as follows: pregnant naturally for the first time just before turning 39 with missed miscarriage at 10 weeks, pregnant again two months later, easy pregnancy, and our beautiful daughter was born just after I turned 40. Then went on to have a missed miscarriage in the first trimester when I was 41 and again at 42....have been trying to conceive since July 2020, taking recommended supplements and using ovulations tests.

Hey my mum got pregnant naturally at 43, so it does happen (unfortunately I did absolutely not inherit her fertility!)

Have you looked at FertilitySmart? It’s a supplement. I used to take it but unfortunately I can’t get pregnant naturally but I did a lot of research and do believe in the product and think it can help (lol I don’t sell it I do just think it’s good)

Hi Maryc32, good to hear your mum had success at 43 and sorry to hear you haven't had as much luck. Thanks for the tip on FertilitySmart - I haven't heard of this particular supplement but I've looked at the ingredients and it's preety much what I'm taking already using other brands. I know some women fall pregnant naturally at this age, for some it's relatively easy and for others next to or in fact impossible. It's a very individual journey and it's hard to know when to stop trying and just leave that part of life behind you.

It can happen, but you don’t have time to loose and best is to look for medical advice, Dona work up and see what they recommend. Good luck!

Thanks BBHH1, I go to my doctor regularly and she knows my history well as I've been going to her for over 10 years. She knows we'd love another child but is never very encouraging, always putting miscarriages down to my age. She hasn't filled me with any confidence that IVF or similar is the way to go as I think she reckons I'm simply too old to have a positive outcome - in fact when I talked to her last she just said, oh, you're 43 now so you probably wouldn't even find a clinic to take you on.

I’m sorry to hear your provider is not supporting you and is misinformed. IVF can work at 43 but needs specialized care. Plenty of woman here that are doing it, so some clinics will refuse but not all. Some exams can shine a light on what are your real chances. IVF when older is not for everyone, but neither is for no one.

You should make a consultation with a fertility doctor. I would ask in the forum for clinics that take older woman and are good with it in your area. Best regards

There will be clinics that take you, I’m 41 now, and have been in the IVF system since I was 37/38.

Unfortunately for people our age with our own eggs is 5% chance and less of having a viable pregnancy.

We had two complete rounds using my eggs, our first round, first go it implanted but I MC before our 7 week scan, two further transfers failed to implant and in round 2, the two embryos we had we PGTA tested and they were chromosomally abnormal.

The consultant said as I had good AMH that we could try again with my eggs and ‘we might get lucky’ but at £10,000 - £12,000 a round it’s incredibly expensive to get lucky.

Hence why our third and final round was using a donor egg from my younger sister.

First transfer I’m 13 weeks + 6

Thanks Running79, lovely to hear success stories well into the 40's. I hadn't even heard of impryl until now - just looked it up and it's reasonably priced so will look into ingredients in more detail. Had a quick look at your last post and see that you are expecting....fantastic news. I wish you all the very best with the rest of your pregnancy - nerve wracking but also massively exciting times for you.

Thanks - I wish it was exciting!! We are certainly not feeling it - more cautious and taking each milestone at a time. I think the excitement will start when it’s safely arrived 🤞

Good luck on your journey

I know, I'd feel the exact same as you....and did during my pregnancy with our daughter after having a missed miscarriage on my first pregnancy. I gained some confidence after getting the harmony test results which all looked good, it was a huge sigh of relief anyway and gave me hope but I was still nervous at every scan until our little bundle of joy arrived. I wish you all the best, the months will fly by and before you know it you'll meet your little one, stay positive.

Although it is possible to become pregnant at 43 through sexual intercourse, the chance for conception drops steeply at this age until a woman clinically enters menopause. It is not unusual for women postponing pregnancy until their 40s to spend a year or more trying to get pregnant naturally. Not me but one friend had her first at 43 and her second at 45. Both naturally. And another friend had her first at 47! I initially presumed that she had had treatment of some sort but apparently this was not the case and she too conceived naturally. Bit of a shock there for her and her then 54-year-old DH .)

Thanks for the reply lawrins. It's encouraging to hear that you know of women that managed to conceive naturally well into their 40's. I would have loved to have had a family at a younger age but unfortunately only found my husband and got married when I was 38. Ever since then we've been trying and we have one adorable 3 year old daughter who fills our life with joy. I'd just love to be able to give her a sibling.

My mum got pregnant and a baby at 46 naturally and her 2nd husband didn't even want children! She struggled to pregnant in earlier years too. He chain smoked and drank. My mum's weight has always been abit up and down as well. My great nan had a baby at 45. I think it perfectly possible to get pregnant naturally at over 40.

Thanks for the input Capricorn41, thanks very positive news given the circumstances. I guess I'm giving it my best shot by taking the recommended supplements, eating well, doing regular exercise and I've never smoked and have given up alcohol and caffeine now, my husband the same so if it's meant to happen it will. Very encouraging to hear success stories though as you hear so much negativity when over 40.

are you taking micronized DHEA? I think that really helped my embryo quality at the age of 43 (although i was doing IVF_, and another friend who had had multiple miscarriages took it at age 43 as well, and got pregnant naturally after a few months.

Hi articsnowfox, no, I've never taken micronized DHEA. I've been taking ubiquinol for almost a year now which should help egg quality but no success so far. Maybe I should switch to DHEA for a few months and see if that would help. Can I ask what brand you have taken and the daily dose you'd recommend?

i can't remember the brand but the main thing is to make sure it is micronized, and depending where you are based, it might need to be prescribed by a doctor. I took 75 mg/day which is the dose at which efficacy (increased birth rates) was observed in clinical trials.

I gave birth at 39 to a healthy boy and had two more natural pregnancies - one at 42 and one almost at 44 but both ended in early miscarriages before heartbeat at 5 weeks and 7 weeks. So yes you can conceive, but it takes longer usually after 40 and chances are much higher that you have an abnormal egg so will have an early miscarriage. There are success stories so it can happen, but odds are against you as a woman of having a baby after 40.
