Stopping pessaries after bfp

Hi everyone, I have had a positive test this week after a fresh transfer and have been told to stop my pessaries now as my body will 'have taken over'.

I can see that most people stay on them between 7-12 weeks?

Has anyone else stopped them so early? It's terrifying me!

Did you have a frozen transfer or fresh? I don’t know anything about a fresh transfer as I never had one but if it was frozen then you normally have to continue until 12 weeks. My doctor actually asked me to continue to week 13...

I had a fresh one and was told to stop after 7 weeks. Stretched the remaining ones out a bit (1/day) but was all good.

I was literally told to stop them on test day. Phoned back again to check and told definitely to come off them. Seems weird every one is different! X

I think if you have never had issues with progesterone, you are able to come off them. If you have had low progesterone at any stage, you would stay on them. Also - did you get your progesterone tested with Hcg? It may be high enough for you to come of it

I haven't had any blood tests since my baseline scan, so no I have'nt been tested. Seems so risky x

Oh! Wow. So no blood test to confirm pregnancy?

Nope! They just do a scan at 7 weeks x

Oh that’s amazing. Maybe you could call and let them know you are feeling anxious about it and ask for a test for your levels if it’s worrying you?

Have you had any miscarriages or ‘chemicals’? I’ve had a few and my chemical (what I thought) was actually because of low progesterone. Because of those issues, I’m on double normal progesterone dose and staying on until 13 weeks. I am currently at 550 (my first draw was 790, so my body isn’t able to do it on its own) which is super high, but it drops very quickly.

Most people, don’t need the extra support at all. Their body recognises the pregnancy and creates progesterone on its own. Yours most likely would do this!

But… Sometimes you have to advocate for yourself and ask extra questions if you don’t feel comfortable. I truly believe they know what they’re doing and you will be fine… but I also am a big believer in feeling silly to feel better. I always think I’d hate to regret not asking.

Good luck!! xx

Hi elsie82. I had a great transfer and i was told to stop pessaries and lubion at 10 weeks, which is today. The thought of stopping petrifies me too. I have enough lubion to last to 11 weeks and pessaries until 12 so I am just going to use them up.

I went for a private scan last weekend and asked whilst I was there and she just told me to do what I felt comfortable with. No one seems to have an answer!! X

It's horrible isn't it! Stopping at 4 weeks seems a bit drastic to me when i haven't had any levels tested. Maybe it is more of an insurance policy in case natural progesterone is low but i'd rather just stay on them...i only have 4 days of the left so not a lot of choice :(Congratulations btw! So exciting x

I had a fresh transfer and was told I could stop taking them after my 7 week viability scan as apparently you only need to take them to 12 weeks if it was a FET. I asked if I could keep taking them and the doc said I didn't need to but there was no harm if I did. Probably a waste of money but I was so paranoid it gave me a little relief taking them!

I’ve always taken them to 12 weeks for fresh and FET. I’ve never heard of stopping them at bfp! I was never tested for progesterone either.

Can you ask for a second opinion within the clinic and say you are anxious about stopping? Maybe speak to your GP about a prescription for progesterone if your clinic won’t extend yours.

Congratulations and good luck x

In your position, i would ask again for explanation from your clinic and also GP or a obgyn. I had a frozen transfer and was told by my clinic to stop at 12weeks. I also consulted with my obgyn as well. She said to take the medications until my 12 weeks as after that placenta takes over and there is no need to take on more medication. If the placenta takes over at 12weeks, i am assuming it would not matter if it was frozen or fresh transfer.....????

Hi Elsie82 I stopped pessaries at this time too, I'm now 31 weeks pregnant. I remember reading these posts at the time and wondering why I didn't need to continue but everything has been fine. Wishing you a happy healthy pregnancy 😊

I was told by my clinic that the placenta can effectively work from 8 weeks, but that they instruct you stay on the medication until after your 12 week scan.

I was on Progynova, cyclogest and prontogest, the clinic told me to wean myself off over a week and gave me the weaning chart

Hello dear, I think different clinics have different guidelines. Moreover, It depends on your protocol and also if it was fresh, DE or fet. I got my bfp from a fet and I have been told to continue until 12 weeks. I am on cyclogest pessaries and crinone gel pessaries. My understanding is that progesterone is produced by the follicle that turns in a corpus luteum. If you have DE or a fet then your ovaries won’t have produced a corpus luteum that month therefore you need the support. Just to put your mind at rest , for this you have to concert with your clinic. They should be able to put your mind at rest. Good Luck…..🤞🤗
