Letrozole without scan, what dosage?

Hi All,

While i wait for my FET im thinking of taking letrozole next month. I bought them abroad and kept them incase all else fails. Am now 40, Ive had 3 ivf cycles (1 long and 2 short), and am a poor responder to the drugs, only produce max 2/3 eggs. So no risk of loads of eggs ovulating. My questions are below:

What dosage did you take - 2mg or 5mg?

Did you always have a scan?

Im doing it without supervision so any advise would be much appreciation.

Thanks in advance.

Jemma x

Hi Jemma

I did two rounds of Letrozole with no supervision and three with so I was comfortable with doing it myself. I was on 5mg days 3 to 7. Like you, I did it while waiting for my treatment

Hi Lisichka, thanks for your response. Did you have any success? Ive seen some women take 2mg and others take 5mg like you. But not sure which one is prescribed in what circumstances. My period only lasts 5days, am 40, low amh and poor responder to ivf.

Didn’t work for me unfortunately but was good to try before going to ivf and again in between rounds. Most women are on 5 or 7.5 from what I’ve observed. I was 32 at the time and have PCOS (so high responder to ivf) and the doctor put me on 5. If you follow this logic, you should be completely fine on 5 but of course check with your doctor. I would also do bbt to make sure ovulation happened.

Hi JemmaI’ve recently tried letrozole. I’ve got a low amh and I am trying it before my third ivf cycle. I’ve taken 2.5mg daily for 5 days starting on day 2 of cycle. I’m also a poor responder to stimulation and only had 2-3 eggs on each ivf cycle. I’ve just started a second month of letrozole. The first month of letrozole I was monitored by the clinic, I had three follicles grow, but the estrogen level 1059 indicated one egg. It wasn’t successful but I’m going to try again this month. I can now do this month of letrozole without monitoring, but I’ll get a scan and blds done at work (I’m a nurse) to see what’s happening just out of interest.

Good luck with everything x

Hi Jokiekin, thanks for your reply. Its such a journey isnt it. But its well worth it if we get our baby out of it and atleast we are trying while we can. Where are you doing your ivf? I am looking for a clinic that specialises in poor responders. Im in London. Glad you are using work for your scans, you are worth much more than a clap! Gov needs to appreciate you more.

It’s definitely a journey. Me and my husband have decided that our next ivf is the last one, it’s not just the expense, but the emotional toll. Tbh I’ve come to the decision that I’m going to look at the outcome positively no matter what happens, we will have a brilliant lifestyle if we don’t have a baby and if we do it’ll be a blessing. I’ve been taking supplements and cut out alcohol, I’ve had a small amount but did 8 weeks without up until recently. so a least we can say we have done everything we could possibly. Think I’ll last ivf will be March/April. We are based in Manchester at CARE. Did you find the short or long protocol to be better for you? I’ve done two short and think I’ll be doing a long next time. I had a poor response with the max dose of stims so going to go back to a lower dose. X

My first protocol was long and that cycle got abandoned due to only 2 mature eggs (16mm and 19mm). Used gonalF.

Second and third protocol were short and i think i did better in the number of initial follicles but both time only retrieved 2 eggs in the end. I think the third time things were better ie had 4 viable eggs but for some reason in the day they could only get 2.

Last 2 protocols were on higher doses. On menopur on second and combination of meriofert and menopur on third.

I got one day 2 embryo frozen from third cycle. But am considering another cycle but mild stim, to get some more embryos put aside before my eggs detetiorate further. We can only plan and try. But it does takes its tolls. After the second cycle i had enough. The third one i was like never again. And here i am 6 months on planning another one. I just hope we all find our peace one way or another. Good luck with whatever you do lovely xx

I’ve had a similar experience, my last cycle I had more follicles but they retrieved less eggs than the first go. So there were empty follicles. Suppose we need to think of quality over quantity. Good luck to you too, let me know how you get on with the letrozole xx
