Insomnia? Can Clomid cause this?

Hi everyone,

I was on clomid (100mg) for 5 days about a month ago and in the last 2-3 weeks, I find I just cant sleep. I used to sleep around 11pm, now its close to 2am and tossing and turning till 4am. My sleep is very light, I could just wake up at 4/5am. Everyday, I don't wake up tired despite everyday feeling like very light sleep.

Has anyone experienced this? Does this have anything to do with Clomid even though I took it only for 5 days? Any feedback is appreciated. Thank you.

Hi S2017. I did have some trouble sleeping when taking Clomid, I think unfortunately is a side effect!

I did manage to fall asleep but woke up a couple of times and also was a very light sleep.

Keep strong and I hope your journey is as smooth as possible! 🤞😊❤

Thank you, for you, did this carry on for weeks even once you stopped Clomid?

No, it got much better once I stopped taking it! But remember every body is different. I hope this side effect, if that's the case, goes quickly away for you.

Cheap Clomid - onlinecheappills.com/clomid... Me and my husband tried to have another baby for about 4 years. I took clomid for 5 days and I ovulated and found out 3 weeks latter I'm having a baby and recently at 8 weeks along I found out I'm having twins.

Hi S. It's not one of the usual side effects, but is working on the 2 main glands in the brain, so perhaps it's something to do with that?? Try drinking some extra water during the day, it may help. Good luck! Diane

This will sound like a random solution but the last 2 years around this time of year I developed severe insomnia - I was sleeping 1-2 hours a night at best, in 20 min slots. 2018 this went on for months, I was a mess. 2019 a friend recommended vitamin D, melatonin, and a SAD lamp. It made a difference after a few days and back to normal after about a month. This year I started them before the days got properly dark and no insomnia. Vitamin D deficiency is super common in the UK because of our weather so if you aren't already taking them for fertility maybe try some? I was taking 3,000 IU per day and had bloods taken for pre-IVF screening and my vit D was normal but only just. I'm on 5,000 IU per day now. You can buy melatonin from iHerb (and high dose vit D) in the US and it's fine to have it sent here as long as it's in personal use quantities. I take 1.5 mg a day at bedtime. xx

Hi, just reading the above, am sure it was an awful time especially once it gets to long term sleep deprivation. It's interesting that you mentioned vitamin D as my levels were low (normal starting at 80, mine was 40) and I was put on a high dose of vit D by the Dr (40,000IU/per week) for 7 weeks very recently.

Now when I think of it, the insomnia started as I was coming off my vit D, am beginning to feel that there might have been a correlation. I will get the SAD lamp, how long do you typically use this for? As for the melatonin, I need to do a bit more reading up.

Thank you for pointing this out, you may think its a random suggestion, for me, it has helped tremendously!! :) I am beginning to connect the dots and am glad that you too are feeling better.

Interesting - maybe the vit D was involved after all, at least in part. Vitamin D is important for so many unexpected things beyond calcium metabolism, eg immunity, and I would never have thought of it as having a role in insomnia if it wasn't for another vet friend recommending it (my doctor never mentioned it to me).

It depends on how powerful a SAD lamp you get and how close you sit as to how long you need to do it for - the higher the lumens, the less you need it, and the closer the shorter time. I bought this one (amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07... and use it for 30 mins on a morning while eating my breakfast and doing internet things (like this forum!) at about 30 cm away from me. It feels very bright to begin with but you get used to it. I have tried ones that turn on slowly while still in bed but don't like them as I am often awake well before my alarm goes off and I find them weirdly disconcerting. Obviously be really strict about no phone or TV within an hour of going to bed as well - we're all guilty of the sleep hygiene no nos!

Melatonin is an interesting beast with respect to fertility and research has demonstrated improved IVF conception rates with melatonin use. It's worth doing some reading on it. Also, sometimes with melatonin less is more because it converts to serotonin, so too much is counterintuitive. I used it years ago and found it did not help when I could not sleep (actually making it worse), then a friend pointed this out to me and I started using it again last year when I had insomnia at almost homeopathic doses (biting off about 1/4 to 1/3 of a 3 mg tablet). This really helped. I now take 1.5 mg as I am prepping for IVF and the benefits seem to be with either 1.5 or 3 mg, depending on the study, and 1.5 does not overcook it now. Good luck! xx

Thank you very much for your revert and all the info. I will be getting a SAD lamp and will look into the one above and the melatonin as well. Thanks and good luck to you as well! Xx

Hi lovely. Yes! I had this really badly on my first clomid cycle and then it calmed loads and was so bad in subsequent cycles. Side effects of clomid aren’t pleasant at all. Best of luck with this cycle xx

I didn’t like clomid at all and I didn’t have any success with it. My friend got pregnant on it though. Weirdly I found IVF easier than clomid. It’s more intense but more productive and I had worse side effects on clomid. Everyone is different though. Good luck xxx

I had zero symptoms and slept well on 50mg Clomid last month, I didn’t ovulate. Unfortunately I’m having a month off because of high levels of LH. Next month I will take 100mg, I will see if that makes any difference.
