No eggs fertilised

strawberriesandcream profile image

Hi all, does anyone have experience of no eggs fertilising?

I had my collection yesterday and my partners sperm we’re dying too soon before being able to fertilise. We didn’t think he had any issues so this has come as a real shock. I think we will have to try ICSI next time.

Be good to hear anything positive from anyone who has been in a similar situation.

Oh god i’m so so sorry. This is heartbreaking and a total curveball after all you’ve put yourself through to get through egg collection.

We’ve had a situation before where one egg fertilised but didn’t make it in the end. It’s just devastating. The lab should be able to give you a view on what the issue was and make sure you really question them about it. We’ve ended up having IMSI on our subsequent cycles which is a process to select the best sperm possible before ICSI is then performed and our fertilisation rate has improved. Your partner may need some further sperm investigations to understand why the quality wasn’t there this time around.

Be kind to yourself, this is just as devastating as any other loss associated with ivf and you’ll need to take some time to grieve, process and do your research to go armed with questions when you have your follow up appointment. Sending strength x

Thanks for the reply. And good to know there are options to consider for next time. Yesterday I just felt like this just isn’t destined for us but perhaps it wasn’t the right treatment in the first place. I hope you have got success from your last round?

I’m sorry the news just have been devastating

We had a terrible 5th round just after the clinics were allowed to reopen. I’m convinced it’s because husband had to do his sample at home and I had to drive it in. It was the worst quality sample in 5 rounds and probably another 3 additional sperm tests before that

Did you have to do the sample at home due to covid? If so I’d stipulate next time that you want to do the sample in the clinic?

Also did they decide to freeze your eggs rather than let them go to waste?

We talked about this a lot yesterday. Neither of us felt comfortable about taking it in and it was over 1 hour before it was given the someone. What they did with it from there who knows. I definitely don’t want to take it in again. Eggs were left to fertilise for 24 hours so they were all no good after that she said. Do you know why the sample was so poor? Have you raised this with your clinic?

I didn’t have chance to raise with my clinic as they thawed some blastocysts frozen from a previous cycle and transferred them and I did get a BFP. But had I not got pregnant I was going to discus with them and say I wasn’t prepared to drive the sample in again. That was my 5th round with that clinic and I was going to try a clinic elsewhere after that anyway

Im so sorry to hear this. This happened to us on our first cycle. I was so naive and thought the hard bit was over and id be pregnant in a week. When i got the call i was absolutely devastated so i can completely sympathise. Definately allow yourself to grieve it is a loss.

We did our 2nd round a few months later, had ICSI and got 7 embryos to freeze xxx

Hearing your positive story after having the same thing has really helped me this morning. It was such a shock to hear when we were told my husband had no issues.

Do you know why none of yours fertilised? They said his lost energy before they got in.

My partner was told he had mild azoospermia (so low sperm count) but obviously they thought the ivf without icsi would work. They dont really know why things dont work for us! Its been said by various docs we are just a bit unlucky and our eggs and sperm are a bit incompatible and dont communicate with each other. A friend and my mum have said to me 'you never know it could happen naturally still' but i know in my heart it wont. They are only trying to help.

Give yourself a little while to recover, be kind to yourself xx

Hey, I’m so sorry to hear this it’s so tough. You expect this to be the “easy” part of the journey. When it happened to us I was prepared for a BFN (or as prepared as you can be but not this!!). Look after yourself and as others have said allow yourself time to grieve.

Our 2nd round we had 19 eggs but only 1 fertilised abnormally and had to be destroyed. On our 1st round we’d had 3 blastocysts and there are no known issues. We never got a satisfactory answer from our clinic as to why which still makes me angry! Hopefully you will get some clarity. We changed clinics and did 2 more egg collections and I’ve been a bag of nerves each time but we had 3 blastocysts and then 4 so it was a one off for us.

We think the clinic was to blame but they’d never admit that (we’d paid for ICSI but they took it upon themselves to do a split IVF / ICSI cycle without our consent). Really hope you get some answers xx

Hi strawberries, it happen to me a month ago. I went from 4 eggs on great track on day 3 to all of them simply giving up on day 5. I was really really devastated. Even though my Doctor Google instincts would have told me the ‘issue’ was sperm quality, my doc is convinced it was egg quality, so I’ve been taking 20 days of growth hormones to prepare for the next cycle.

Hello , I have also been in this situation , in our first round none of our eggs were fertilised, I was so devastated because I didn’t expect it and couldn’t stop crying . Our second round we had 11 fertilised so it went much better . We are starting our third round in October. Just because this happened to you once doesn’t mean it will happen again xx
