FET or Fresh transfer?

Morning ladies

I'm interested in your thoughts and experience around a fresh or a frozen transfer? I'm doing my first IVF after failed IUIs, and I'm nearing the end of my stims, which is nerve wracking and exciting altogether. But I feel a little unprepared for what happens next. I'm off to my clinic tomorrow for my day 7 scan to see how follicles are developing, and I'm hoping to get some more clarity.

I'm on a long protocol, and I think the plan is to freeze any embryos and then transfer next month after I've had a menstrual cycle. But as its my first IVF cycle I'm not sure why I'm not being offered a fresh transfer first and then freeze any embryos if there are any others. I'm 40 years old, and maybe that's why? I've read that FETs can be more successful for women of my age, however the stats are a bit skewed as its often because their embryos were frozen when they were younger and eggs healthier.

I'd be grateful for any insights or experience - at the moment I feel a bit out of the loop and like my clinic has made decisions without really consulting me about what I want :-(

xx

Hi, I am also above 40 and doing All freeze cycles. I think that the benefit is that your endometrium can be better prepared outside the stimulation cycle. One thing you could consider is batching to get embryos while you are still young (as opposed to in 1 year time after a few miscarriages). You could end up lucky on the first attempt but for older women, I heard that it’s quite usual to have 6-7 failed cycles and miscarriages. That can lose precious time

Doing several cycles back to back, freezing embryos. You start the transfers in 6 months time once collected enough embryos for all the likely failed transfers and miscarriages.

Hey HemBella. Apart from getting eggs out as soon as possible and getting you in the best place possible for transfer as mentioned by Lilly, I'm not actually sure why they have decided this without consulting you unless you are at risk of OHSS? I am someone who likes to get on with things ASAP and also have some bit of control, so I think you have every right to be asking your clinic why they are doing this and if there's other options...
