Positive test 5 weeks after d and c??

Hi Everyone,

First time poster but I’ve been reading everyone’s stories for a while now and it’s been so helpful. I’m 35 and here in New Zealand but have found this group so much more helpful then anything here! So firstly thank you!

Background is ttc for 3 years, first ivf only 2 eggs but both fertilised, fresh transfer bfn then we had a fet with a BFP!

But after everything looking good early on we had missed miscarriage with stopping growing at about 8 weeks from the measurement. I had a d and c 5 weeks 2 days ago and was told by my doctor I’d get my period between 4 and 6 weeks and can start another round of ivf.

I was especially grumpy today and wanting my period to hurry up, but thought I’d do a pregnancy test just in case a miracle had happened and somehow we’d conceived naturally? The test says positive but could it just be as issue from the missed miscarriage and d and c? My clinic isn’t open until Monday so trying not to get my hopes up again but wondered if anything similar had happened to anyone and if had been a pregnancy or just yet another issue :)

Thanks everyone!

I'm in NZ as well, sorry for your loss, have the fertility clinic been monitoring your hcg levels Afters d&c? Can take a while to clear the system all depending how high your original hcg levels were. I'm hoping you conceived naturally, what a miracle

I had positive tests for at least 5 weeks after my D&C and my periods didn’t return for 11 long weeks. It can take a long time for your HCG levels to drop back to zero after a MMC. It could also be due to retained tissue so it is worth talking to your doctor about it. I lost patience after about 10.5 weeks of waiting for my period and the GP ordered bloods and a scan - they all came back normal and 2 days later my period showed up on its own. I’m sorry this waiting can feel like forever, it just takes your body a while to recover.

You could have a couple of things going on, it might be that your hCG is taking longer to drop than some ladies....it varies from person to person. You may also have a little retained tissue which can also stop your hCG from getting back to normal and may require intervention. However you could also be pregnant, it can happen quickly. Its difficult to know if you haven't had a negative test in between or you clinic didnt check your hCG. Give them a ring on Monday, good luck.xx

Firstly, i’m very sorry for your loss. I also had a miscarriage a few weeks ago. Did you get a negative test after your d&c and then a positive?

Thanks everyone. No blood test after the d&c so not sure if it got to zero. So frustrating! I couldn’t get hold of the clinic so went and got a blood test this morning and the results still got to them with an Amh of 20. So sounds like could just still be making its way out but they’re not sure so need to do another blood test in a couple of day! This process really is a rollercoaster!
