What could/should I see on a scan at 5+6 weeks?

I’ve been booked in for an early scan at the epu on Wednesday after experiencing cramping over the weekend. The nurse did say that they might not be able to see anything at this early stage and to be prepared for that.

Has anyone had a scan at this point and what did you see? Positive and negative stories welcome. I’m terrified I’m having another miscarriage 😭

I had a 7mm sac at exactly 5 weeks and they could just make out there was something inside the sac. I had hcg levels taken 3 days apart too (it fell over the weekend) they were more useful as it showed an adequate rise over a period of time x

Thank you 🙂 I’m not sure a scan this early is a great idea but I can’t ignore this pain. I just want to know if it’s going wrong and can’t wait until my 7 week scan xxx

I’ve had loads of strange aches and pains too, so every chance that your scan will go well! I’ve had 4 scans so far and all have been fine, it’s almost 2 weeks since my last scan and I’m getting anxious to have another but forcing myself to wait! X

I just wanted to say I had severe cramping and pains at 5 weeks and everything was fine, I’m now 11 weeks x

Thank you so much for sharing that with me 💜 I’ve found it so hard to find anything about cramping, everything seems to be about bleeding/spotting.

Did they suggest what had caused it? I have endometriosis and ibs and I’m desperate to believe it’s to do with that.

Best of luck for the rest of your pregnancy xxx

I had mild endo ablated a couple of years ago. They said although it’s early it can still be the uterus stretching and growing and ligaments pulling, plus I have a TAC stitch in place around the bottom of my uterus so could be that. I had lots of bowel gas on the scan!! And they said bloating can cause pains and cramps x

All my endo is on my left side and that is where I’m feeling persistent pain. I’m just hoping so much that when I had this pain last time it wasn’t linked to the impending miscarriage and that it will turn out ok this time x

Hi lovely, I had cramping on one side of my ovaries and was sent for an early 6 week scan. I was told this was due to my ovaries being enlarged which is normal with IVF. When I had my scan I could only see a little bean shape but we could see the heartbeat flickering. I know days can make a big difference for the scans so hopefully you get to see your little one. Be strong and try to stay positive - I know its a nerve racking time. xxx

Oh bless you, it's horrible isn't it? I have also had a previous early miscarriage so was terrified that it was happening again when I had bleeding at 5 weeks. I had an early scan at 5w+4 and we saw yolk sac, fetal pole and even a little heartbeat. It was amazing and such a relief. The sonographer did say we might not see anything but I still wanted to have the scan to attempt to get some reassurance. I ended up having lots of emergency scans as they discovered a subchorionic haematoma but it's all resolved now and I'm almost 17 weeks along. Best of luck with your scan x

I had my scan on the 6th week and had seen my tiny embryo inside. The doctors are right, it can be so that you won't see anything but don't worry. The embryos are too small on this stage yet. Looking forward to updates soon) Fingers crossed

I also had a miscarriage (in March) so totally get your worry and anxiety. I’m sure the pains are nothing to worry about, esp as you aren’t bleeding. Great you have a scan coming up. Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy x

Sorry you're going through this, it's such an awful experience but hopefully all will be ok. I had a scan 6w3d and they saw sac, fetal pole and strong heart beats from both my little ones. I had strong cramps and bleeding but all was good. I've since had another episode of cramps and a lot more bleeding and had another scan at 7w1d. I have a large area of bleeding around the sacs but my babies are going strong. I hope your scan will help to provide you with some reassurance. Wishing you all the best, take care, stay calm and as positive as you can be xx

Hi Chikp, I just wanted to drop a quick note to say that cramping at this early stage can be totally normal. I'm currently 17 weeks pregnant and experienced cramping and spotting up to around 13 weeks. I had 4 miscarriages before this pregnancy so I completely understand the worry but try to stay positive :)

Thank you so much for all your replies. I’m not expecting a heartbeat but hoping that this scan may be able to reassure us that everything is in the right place and at the appropriate stage for my dates. I just want to know that the cramping and pain is nothing to worry about for now as it’s been worse tonight. I’m pretty sure that if they had scanned me earlier last time and checked my bloods I would have seen that it wasn’t developing properly. Time will tell xxx
