Thyroid Question

Hi ladies

Quick question for those of you who have taken Levothyroxine.

Once your thyroid numbers lowered to their optimum level did you stop taking the medication or continue to take it until you got pregnant?

Went for a blood test today so I’m not sure of my level yet but I’m assuming they’ve gone down after the medication as they were never that high anyway.

The nurse didn’t know and I’m don’t want to waste a GP appointment to ask about it.

Hope you are all enjoying the sunshine ☀️😊 xx

Hi

I would never advise not to follow up with your doctor but I have been taking thyroid medication since I started trying having a baby with donor eggs, was always told by my ivf doctor to keep taking them whether feet transfer worked or not and have been told to keep taking them now that I am taking a break before trying again. My levels have gone down since I started taking it ( about 1 year and a half and have blood tests every 6 months) but still get told to keep taking them probably for life. x

Thanks for the reply. Mine was below 4 to start with so that’s why I thought I should stop but your right I should just keep going. Overthinking things 🤦‍♀️ x

Hi there, I continued to take mine and then right through pregnancy. I only stopped once my baby was born. It was also monitored throughout and an increase in the dose was needed too 😊

Hi there, you will need to continue to take Levothyroxine and as soon as pregnancy is confirmed your dosage should be increased by 25mcg and you should have TSH,T3 and T4 re-tested every 4 weeks. Tsh should be always below 2.5 in first trimester.

You can read more about thyroid and pregnancy on the British Thyroid Foundation and Thyroid UK.

Hi Kyell,

I'm still pregnant, but plan to stay on Levothyroxine for life: I had symptoms that were sorted out as soon as I started with the medication.

Ask your GP, anyway.

Good luck with your journey!

I’ve been on it for 10 years and have been told to take it for the rest of my life x

I got put on mine for treatment as I was subclinical - Dr wouldnt normally have treated as my levels were only 4.96 which is classed as "normal" but not good enough for conception. Ive just to stay on meds for which will probably be for life. Incidentally I dont know if you have a family history as it does run in families but my mum and her brother are both on levothyroxine. I see Kiedy84 said you need to up your dose by 25 when you get pregnant and have this monitored.xx

You will definitely need to stay on it and very likely increase your dose as soon as you get pregnant. My levels were just over 5 but you need to be (ideally) below 2.5 in order to conceive. My doctor didn’t recommend increasing my dose when I got pregnant (and I didn’t know better then) but all consultants, fertility nurses etc have subsequently told me that my dose should have been increased. Sadly I lost that baby but I will know for next time. X

Thanks for all the advice ladies.

You are all right, why risk it!

I’ve called the dr this afternoon and left a message telling them I need a new prescription so to add it to my repeat list (I have quite a few prescriptions on there already so what’s another tablet every day😩)

Hope you are all coping with the heat, down regging in a heatwave when your used to rubbish Scottish weather is not fun!! X
