Quick question, how many embryos do you choose to transfer at one time, 1 or 2? Is it your choice or does the doctor ‘tell’ you what to do? Does it affect chances?
Sorry for all the questions, my wife and I are just starting the process and questions keep popping into my head! Thanks

They recommend one but in some cases you may be allowed to transfer 2. It really depends on the clinic and I would say it doesn’t really impact the outcome .
For your first cycle it would only be one embryo allowed. I can’t remember the exact NICE guidelines but you or your wife would need to be at least 37 and on your second cycle before they should offer you more than one to transfer.
Having 2 embryos transfered does not double the chances. It can increase them but not by much, but there is an argument that if both embryos are not of equal grade it can cause both to fail.
Also need to think about the financial and health implications if both embryos do stick and you end up with twins. If you’re both quite young you won’t be offered more than 1 in this country.
I think a lot of it is based on age. I’m 37 and we were only allowed 1 for our first 2 cycles. We’ve been told we can go for 2 on our next round. There’s a table on this somewhere on the Hefa website but I couldn’t find the link to send you when I tried! X
Thanks for replying. Yes would be the first cycle, we are still at the very early stages. Just had our AMH levels back and now we are trying to decide if only one of us should try or both of us. So many decisions!
We were allowed to choose how many to put back on each cycle.
Our first cycle we put two 5 day blasts back and got a BFN. Our third cycle (second cycle got cancelled halfway) we put two 5 day blasts back and we now have 15 month old twin girls.
We are looking at having a FET later this year but will only put one back as we would want to reduce the risk of having twins again.
Hi I think it depends on your individual case. In my case because of my age and the good quality embryos we managed to get (blastocyst) we were only allowed too transfer 1 on our first try which was a fresh cycle, this cycle didn't work. Second time we transfered 1 Frozen embryo all this was decided by the Dr, again this didn't work for us. So third time they gave me the choice of transferring 1 or 2 frozen embryos, I opted for 2 as I felt it would give us the best possible chance and they were our last 2 in storage. We was lucky that it worked the third time and we are now 10 weeks pregnant with just 1 baby. I wish you all the best in your journey
We only ended up with two viable blastos by the time we got to 5dp collection (We originally had 10 from egg collection) and I asked the clinic to put both in and they advised only to put one back and to freeze the other. Best advice they could have given as our first transfer ended in chemical pregnancy and the second I’m now 15 weeks pregnant 😬
It’s a very early loss, we got a positive after our first transfer and then lost the pregnancy 4 days later. And thank you, we are delighted at how far we have got so far! Good luck on your journey, it’s not easy, emotionally exhausting but worth it when you get the result you are hoping for!
Yes so true. We all tend to trust and believe in the doctors so much we almost forget it’s our body and our ultimate decision
I am 42 and the embryology raccomend me to have 2 embryos transferred. I think it depends on your age. Both emplaned and I am now expecting twins! I would ask your consultant and embryologist
Hi there, think it depends on the individual case and the clinic. Our clinic will only transfer one at a time. There is some research to say that if there is a weaker embryo of the 2, the body will focus on trying to develop that embryo. If that does not work then you might have ruined your chances of developing the good embryo. Definitely worth having a good conversation about their policy, if they have one. Good luck x
Age is a factor so they will go with one - but I think they consider your chances of further pregnancies in the future. As I’m 41, they were happy to proceed with two embryos being transferred...
Hi i was 40 (nearly 41) and had 2x Grade 1 eggs. They transfered on day 2 both eggs on the scientist reccomendation. Currently 5 1/2 weeks and waiting for my 7 week scan. Nervous to find out if its twinnies or not.
Ive always been like 'please no twinnies' just because of the normal fears of how will i cope, but from the very first injection my attitude changed and now i would be grateful for a possitive outcome no matter if that is 1 or 2. My cramps are very prominent for only being 5 weeks 3 days and ive also gained some pound. The weight isnt helped by the cyclogest but the last week has just been different. I find out on July 10th.
Fingers crossed - no sickness yet. Good luck for your test day on Sunday xx
