Initial consultation - what to expect?

We have our first appointment next month at the fertility clinic, feeling nervous and scared but hopeful at the same time!

Does anyone have any tips on what we should expect, questions we should ask?

... or cake I should get in for after to make me feel better?! Haha

Thanks in advance for advice xx

Hi there! I don’t have any tips or questions or answers, but I wanted to say we have our first appt a week today so you’re not alone. Diane can email a list of questions which can be a starting point for you. Good luck and look after yourself xx

Thanks for the reply and good luck with your appointment next week, how are you feeling about it? I shall definitely try and get a list of questions off Diane, sounds like a helpful start! Xx

Thank you. I was feeling ok it has been a long 5 month wait. However the last week or two have taken their toll on my anxiety and am not feeling my best. But just got to take each day as it comes. I will let you know how it goes for us, maybe slightly different as we now know we have severe male factor and only route is Ivf but either way I can share our experience. Lots of love x

We were referred in Nov and looks like June/ July when we can get started!

The longer it goes on the more anxious I get and I explained that too. People will ask what’s next and I say I don’t know. I have some goodish days and really low days. My husband has a very low count and morphology so he’s panicking too. x

Welcome 😊! It’s so hard to remember what to ask when your in their. I would definitely get cake after though! My advice would be to write anything you do want to ask down because if your anything like me I went in and forgot everything as was so nervous! Take your time.. and also take it step by step! Xxx

I definitely agree with lifelongdream! I have a little notebook I keep in my handbag as questions occur to me at the weirdest times. Maybe do a little research on what the initial consultation usually involves: two blogs I'd recommend are The Duff and Preggers Kitchen. The first consultation is usually base line tests, bloods, weight etc but its such a relief to feel something is actually happening!!

Good luck, let us know how the appointment goes.

xx

I found my first and second a bit mind blowing! They talk so quickly I almost feel they are on a timer and can’t wait see the next couple.

Our first was better than the second as at the second they revealed more tests- more hoops to jump through. I just want to fast forward all this waiting around and consultation meetings to me actually starting a cycle.

Hope you get a better experience. x

Thanks for the advice, do you mind me asking what tests you had to do? I have done blood tests to test ovulation and my partner has done two semen samples so far - we had to do these for the referral. Hope you don’t have to wait too much longer xx

Yes we had those then my husband had to have another test after 3 months. I then had x-rays and my tubes tested along with an internal and external scan.

Now they have decided to give my husband a blood test and they won’t proceed until they have these. X

Oh yes and lots more emotions to go through.

I’ve just been on the phone to the clinic to chase up the letter to the GP. I’m not waiting round like I did in the beginning- learn from my mistake- chase up everything or you get left out in the cold.

Good luck. X
