Thyroid Advice

Prayingforafamily profile image

Hi just hoping for some advice. I recently had a bfn, started bleeding before end of 2ww. I have one embryo left and want to ensure I have the best chance. I decided to get my thyroid checked and my results are TSH 2.1 and T4 18.4 are these normal for tcc? Hope someone can help x

Hi, I had my thyroid removed in 2016 due to thyroid cancer and my IVF doc said that ideally TSH should be between 1 and 2 (mine is 0.001 to prevent cancer reoccurring) so may be worth speaking to your IVF doctor about it.

The normal GP is unlikely to take it seriously if it’s within acceptable “range”.

Good luck

Hi, so sorry to hear about your bfn.

I had an appointment with IVF doc yesterday. She said normal TSH is 0-4, for IVF they are looking for it to be less than 2.5, so sounds like you’re all good. I’ve booked myself to get mine tested so I’ll be happy if its same as you x

Thanks for replies. I haven’t been tested for antibodies... can my GP do this?

Yes they can but because your TSH is normal they probably won't. My TSH was 5.20 in October and my GP even then didn't test anitibodies so I did those tests privately in Poland and that's how I have found out I have Hashimoto's Thyroiditis. I am now on Levothyroxine.

The TSH for conception ideally should be around 1 and definitely below 2.5.

What made you think about your thyroid? Do you have anyone in a family with problems?

To get the full picture you should test:

TSH, T3, T4 and antibodies: TPOAb and TgAb.

Hope this helps xxx

Thanks for your reply. I had unsuccessful ivf and seems to be implantation issues. So I wanted to check as much as I could before transferring my last precious embryo. X

I am sorry hun, I totally understand.

If you can test for antibodies I would as Hashimoto's is know to increase chances of miscarriage and the only way to find out is to do blood tests.

Good luck xxx

Thanks... my gp won’t do these so need to look where it can be tested... it may be costly I imagine

Hello there. Sorry to hear about your BFN. Always so distressing! I was told by my fertility doctor and acupuncturist that ideally TSH should be under 2.5. My TSH was originally over 4 (which my GP knew about and knew I was TTC conceiving and didn’t offer thyroxine until I realised it was a problem and pushed the issue!) At a later date I asked my GP to test my antibodies for Hashimotos which they did quite willingly. Wishing you all the luck xx
